Nine people at the party were warm to you and one was cool. On the way home you thought only about the one. You went back over what you had said to them. You plan to be extra friendly next time, and you resent it already. I worry so much about what other people think.
Wanting to be liked is ordinary, and most people would notice the one cool face.
01
What you do to be liked
A good deal of effort may go into it.
You adjust to whoever you are with. You agree a little more than you mean to. You remember birthdays and send the follow-up message. When someone seems off, you work on them until they warm up.
One person's coolness can outweigh a room full of goodwill.
People call it being a people pleaser, or being nice. I don't like to let people down.
It can cost you your own preferences, which get set aside so often you may lose track of them. The people who like you may be liking someone a little edited.
02
What the effort may be protecting
"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."
The effort may be going toward a room in which nobody is upset. Under Peace, the cool person is a problem because they might be upset, and their upset would mean you did something.
Read about Peace →"I need to be chosen."
It may be about being picked. Under Chosen, each person is someone who could choose you or pass you over, and the one who didn't is the one who counts.
Read about Chosen →"I'm still working for someone who may not even be watching anymore."
Everyone may be standing in for someone. Under Approval, the cool face may matter because it resembles one particular face. Someone in my family was good to me and hard on me at the same time. The voice telling me I could look better still sounds like them.
Read about Approval →These are three of several, and none may be yours.
03
What is under the rule
Under Peace, the fear may be that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. What would answer it is being able to disappoint someone and still be alright.
Under Chosen, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. What would answer it is belonging that isn't competitive.
Under Approval, the fear may be that without their verdict you don't know what you are worth. What would answer it is an internal measure that doesn't require ratification.
Being liked by the tenth person answers none of the three. There would be an eleventh.
04
Three questions, in order
First, for Peace and Approval. Is it anyone being upset with you, or one person's verdict?
Anyone is the Peace answer. One person, someone you can name, is the Approval answer.
Second, for Chosen and Approval. Is there one specific person whose verdict runs this, or is it anyone who might pick you?
Anyone is the Chosen answer. One person is the Approval answer.
Third, for Peace and Chosen. Would you rather have no conflict and be nobody's favorite, or be someone's favorite and have friction?
Taking no conflict is the Peace answer. Taking the favorite, friction and all, is the Chosen answer.
If the three leave it open, there is not enough to tell, and that counts.
Some of this is plain good manners. Being considerate is not a rule. For Peace, the check is whether it happens with people who have never been angry with you. For Chosen, what counts is the pattern across unrelated rejections.
Each question is a small act of subtraction. It can take one of the three away.

One thing to try this week
Write down the last three people whose coolness stayed with you for more than a day.
Beside each name, write one line on what you did about it.
Look at the three and see whether they have anything in common.
How this works as a strategy is on People-Pleasing.
