Left out by friends: why it hurts so much

By · Last updated

Being left out by friends can feel like a judgment on you when it touches a fear about being picked, being needed, or one person's opinion of you.

Rules this may be

You saw the photos. A dinner, six people you know, and nobody mentioned it to you. You told yourself it was nothing, and then looked at the photos again. By the next morning you had gone through every recent conversation for a reason. I've started wondering which of my friends are really my friends.

Being left out stings almost everyone. This page is about when it does more than sting.

This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why do I need everyone to like me.

01

What you do afterward

The hurt arrives first. Then come the things you do with it.

You go back over what you might have said or done. You decide what it means about the friendship. You pull back a little, answer more slowly, wait to see whether anyone notices.

Or you go the other way and become very easy to include. You host. You organize. You make sure it can't happen again.

People call it being sensitive, or fear of missing out. The second one is about the event. What you are feeling may have very little to do with the dinner.

Pulling back can carry a cost. Friends who don't know why you have gone quiet may assume you are busy, and invite you less.

02

What the hurt may be protecting

A layer down is what the missing invitation was taken to say.

Chosen

"I need to be chosen."

It may say that six people were picked and you were not. Under Chosen an invitation is a small selection, and this one went the other way.

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

It may say the evening worked fine without you. Under Needed the hurt may be less about not being picked and more about not being needed there. In my family I'm the one who's useful, not the one who's included.

Approval

"I'm still working for someone who may not even be watching anymore."

It may matter because of who was at the table. Under Approval one person's guest list can outweigh ten other invitations.

Other rules can be in this too, and it may be none of them.

03

What is under the rule

Further down is the fear that turns a guest list into a statement.

Under Chosen, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select.

Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you.

Under Approval, the fear may be that without their verdict you don't know what you are worth.

What would answer them is belonging that isn't competitive, being wanted and not required, or an internal measure that doesn't require ratification. One invitation, even to the next dinner, would not supply any of those.

04

Three questions, in order

First. Would you rather be loved and unnecessary, or necessary and taken for granted?

Set it in this group of friends. In one version they love you and the evenings run fine whether or not you are there. In the other, nothing happens unless you arrange it, and nobody says so. Choosing the first is the Chosen answer. Choosing the second is the Needed answer.

Second, whatever the first answer was. Is there one specific person whose verdict runs this, or is it anyone who might pick you?

If being left out by anyone would do this, that is the Chosen answer. If it comes down to one person, someone you can name, that is the Approval answer.

Those two leave Needed and Approval unsorted. For that pair: which would be harder to lose, being needed, or one person's good opinion of you? Being needed is the Needed answer. One person's opinion is the Approval answer.

If none of the three separates anything, there is not enough to tell yet, and that counts.

And sometimes people are simply unkind, or careless, or the table only seated six. One missed dinner is one missed dinner. What to look at is cost, and whether being left out keeps changing how you act around people long after the evening is over.

This is subtraction in miniature. You are not looking for the explanation that sounds best. You are removing the ones that don't hold.

05

One thing to try this week

Before you decide what it meant, write down three ordinary reasons it could have happened. They don't have to be likely. They only have to be possible.

Then notice which of the three you can't make yourself believe, and what you believe in its place.

That sentence, the one you believe, is the thing to look at. Keep it.
