Why am I so jealous? (Even with no reason)

By · Last updated

Being so jealous with no reason behind it is often less about what your partner is doing and more about a fear of not being the one they would pick.

Rules this may be

They mention a coworker's name twice, and you feel it. They are smiling at their phone and you want to know who it is. Nothing has happened. You know nothing has happened. You ask anyway, in a light voice, and dislike yourself for asking.

That is one reading. There is at least one other, and the first thing to settle is whether there really is no reason.

This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why do I need everyone to like me.

01

What you do when it comes

The feeling is quick. What follows it takes longer.

You ask a question that is casual on the surface. You look at who liked the photo. You hold yourself up against the other person: their job, their looks, how easily they talk. You go quiet, or you start an argument about something unrelated.

Later you apologize, and you mean it. Then it happens again.

People call this insecurity or being possessive. Possessive suggests you think you own someone. From inside it may feel closer to the opposite, as if your place could be given away at any time.

There can be a cost on the other side. A partner who keeps being asked may start to feel accused, and may begin leaving things out to avoid the questions. Then there is something being left out.

02

What the jealousy may be protecting

One layer down is what the other person stands for. It may have little to do with them.

Chosen

"I need to be chosen."

Anyone your partner enjoys may register as someone they could pick over you. Under Chosen the coworker is not a person so much as a comparison. Sometimes I wonder if they'd be happier with somebody more like them.

Approval

"I'm still working for someone who may not even be watching anymore."

It may be this one partner whose regard you can't do without. Under Approval the jealousy may be about what their opinion of you has come to carry. I had to step back from someone whose opinion used to run my whole day.

These are not the only possibilities. Watching closely for trouble can also appear under Ahead, where the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again.

03

What is under the rule

Each of the two has a fear that would turn a name mentioned twice into a threat.

Under Chosen, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. What would answer it is belonging that isn't competitive.

Under Approval, the fear may be that without their verdict you don't know what you are worth. What would answer it is an internal measure that doesn't require ratification.

Neither is settled by checking. Whatever checking shows, the question may be back by Thursday.

04

One question that separates them

Is there one specific person whose verdict runs this, or is it anyone who might pick you?

Your partner is one person you can name, so ask it about more than this relationship. If it has been whoever was in front of you, that is the Chosen answer. If it belongs to one person, someone you can name, that is the Approval answer.

If you can't tell, there is not enough to go on yet, and that is a result.

Now the plain explanations. Sometimes there is a reason. If this partner has lied to you before, being wary is not a rule. It may be a fair response to what happened. And if the checking has grown into keeping track of where someone goes and who they see, that is past what this page covers, and licensed mental-health care is the right door. If it is the other way around, and a partner keeps track of where you go and who you see, that is a different situation from anything on this page. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

A no is as useful as a yes here. Subtraction is the practice of removing the explanations that don't survive, and looking at what does.

05

One thing to try this week

The next time it comes, say the fear in place of the question. Not who was that? Something closer to I got scared for a second. If you know what the fear was, say that too.

It is a harder sentence. It may also be the more accurate one, and it gives your partner something they can answer.

Notice what they do with it, and what happens to the jealousy once it has been said that way. Write it down.

The quieter form of the same thing is on I Need Reassurance When Nothing Is Wrong.
