Exactly what we check, and what we don't

Every record is a list of dated facts. Here is how each one gets there.

The eight checks

  1. IdentityWe confirm the name on the record matches the license, certification and insurance documents we check.
  2. CertificationConfirmed by email or phone with the body that issued it. We never accept a screenshot.
  3. State licenseLooked up on the state board’s public search, where a license exists for the work. If none is held, the record says so plainly.
  4. Discipline recordsWe search the public discipline records that exist for the license or certification, and record the date we searched.
  5. Liability insuranceWe see the insurance certificate and record the carrier and expiry date.
  6. Years in practiceAs stated by the practitioner, and labelled self-reported.
  7. What they work withAs stated by the practitioner, and labelled self-reported.
  8. FeesAs published by the practitioner, including whether they offer a sliding scale.

"Last checked"

Every record carries its date

Records are re-checked at least once a year. Insurance is re-checked when it expires, and licenses are re-checked on a schedule.

If a record goes out of date, the date shows it. We don't hide an old check behind a fresh-looking page.

What we don't check

The parts only you can judge
