Why do I test people? Testing your partner

By · Last updated

Testing people is setting a quiet exam, such as going silent or saying it's fine, to see whether they will come after you.

You stopped texting first, to see how long it would take them. You said don't worry about it and waited to see whether they would worry. You mentioned your birthday once, lightly, and did not mention it again. They did not pass. They did not know there was anything to pass.

It usually ends with a result you believe and they never knew about.

This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why do I need everyone to like me.

01

What it looks like

You pull back and watch. You leave a gap where you would normally step in, and count how long it stays open.

You say less than you mean. It's fine. Do what you want. The real question is whether they will see through it.

Sometimes it is sharper. You pick a small fight to see whether they stay. You say you are thinking of leaving to see whether they ask you not to.

When they don't do what you hoped, it goes on a list.

02

What it protects

Across the rules below, it may protect you from asking directly. A direct question can get a direct no. A test lets you find out without having asked.

What you are trying to find out is the part the behavior can't tell you.

03

The rules it can serve, and what is under each

Chosen

"I need to be chosen."

The test may be whether they will choose you without being prompted. Under it, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. Being chosen only counts, on this view, if nobody asked for it. It takes me falling apart or saying I'm leaving before I really get heard.

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

The test may be whether anyone notices when you stop doing what you do. Under it, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you.

Two candidates is a short list. Other rules can set tests as well, and this page does not reach them.

04

What it buys and what it costs

Now and then it buys what you were after. Someone does come looking, and for an evening the question is settled.

More often the cost may fall on both of you. A person who doesn't know they are being examined can fail without having done anything. You can end up with a result that feels like proof, and they can end up with a distance they can't explain.

And a pass may not hold. If it took a test to get it, the next quiet week can call for another one.

05

How to tell which rule is under it

Would you rather be loved and unnecessary, or necessary and taken for granted?

Answer it about the person you test most. Loved, even if they would manage fine without anything you do, is the Chosen answer. Necessary, even if they never say so, is the Needed answer.

If you can't tell, or neither fits, there is not enough to go on yet. That is a result.

One thing is not this strategy. Stepping back from someone who has treated you badly, and watching what they do, is paying attention. If your own tests have grown into silence or threats to leave that are meant to make someone do what you want, that is past what this page covers, and licensed mental-health care is the right door. And if a partner uses silence or threats to leave as a way of controlling you, that is something else again. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

Subtraction means taking explanations away until what is left has to carry the evidence.
