You went. You both showed up, most weeks. You learned to say I feel and to repeat back what the other said. In the office it worked. In the car on the way home, you had the fight.
This page is for both of you. It is not an argument against couples therapy, and it is not a reason to stop going.
01
It may have done more than it seems
If you fight more fairly than you did, or shorter, that came from somewhere. Skills are real.
What couples therapy is and when it helps is a question for a clinical source. Cleveland Clinic's page on marriage counseling covers both, including why it sometimes doesn't work.
02
Four possibilities
The work was on the talking. Better words improve how a fight goes. They may not reach what the fight is standing in for. The library's short version is that the issue may not be communication. It may be emotional safety.
Each session started from the most recent fight. If the hour went to that one, there may have been little room for what all of them had in common.
The fit was off, or the timing. It may not have been the right time for the two of you, or the therapist's way of working may not have suited you both. That happens with good therapists.
Or it is not a loop. Some couples want different things, and no method changes that.
03
One example
A couple learns to take turns and not interrupt. Now one of them states their case calmly, the other agrees calmly, and nothing is settled, calmly.
Under the calm agreement there may still be Peace, where the fear is that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. Under the calm case there may still be Right, where the fear is that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about. Either of you may be near either one. Other rules could be there, or none.
This may be the loop described on The Peacekeeper and the One Who Needs to Be Right, and the question that separates those two rules is there. Each of you answers it for yourself.
The skills were sound. They may have been laid over a loop that kept running. If neither answer fits, there is not enough to tell yet.

What this page does not say
It does not say therapy failed you, or that you failed at it.
It does not say this method would have done better. Subtraction does a narrower thing. It looks for the loop, and it is not therapy or counseling.
If things between you are getting worse, that is a reason to go toward a licensed clinician and not away from one.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
How to lay one fight out in order is on The Same Fight, Decoded.
