Therapy isn't helping. What now?

By · Last updated

If therapy isn't helping, it may have helped more than it seems, and the limit you reached may be fit, focus or timing and not your effort.

You gave it a real try. Months, or years. You were honest and you showed up. You have a better vocabulary now and the same Wednesday evenings. I've been seeing a therapist for years and it helps. I still feel like I need something more.

This page offers things to consider. It does not tell you what to choose.

01

First, what it may have done

Understanding is real, and it may be what has to come before anything else. If you can now say what you do and when, therapy gave you that.

It may also have done its job and reached its end. Some work finishes. Whether yours has is something to talk through with the therapist, and not something this page can tell.

02

What the limit may have been

The fit. A different therapist is sometimes the whole answer.

The focus. The sessions may have taken each week as it came, which is a fair use of them, and the thing that kept coming back may never have been the subject.

The approach. There are many kinds of therapy, and they are not alike. Cleveland Clinic and NIMH describe the main ones.

The timing. Life may not have left room for it.

None of these is about how hard you tried.

03

What may be worth considering

A different therapist, or a different kind of therapy. A clinician can advise on which, and When Therapy Is the Right Door says when therapy is the place to be.

A different question. Therapy asks many things. One it may not have asked is what condition of worth or safety, if any, may be under the thing that repeats. That is the narrow question this library asks. It is not therapy.

Nothing for a while. That is allowed.

04

Who this question tends to suit

Someone who can describe the pattern in a sentence and still runs it. I Have Done Years of Therapy. Why Do I Still Feel Stuck? is about that position.

05

Who it does not suit

Someone whose difficulty is clinical, or who is getting worse. That is a reason to go toward a licensed clinician, and not away. Licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

Someone looking for proof that therapy was a waste. It probably wasn't, and this library won't say so.

Why a therapist may not have been looking for this is on Why Your Therapist May Not Have Found This.

When this may need professional support. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. Project Gina does not replace it. In the US, call or text 988.
