Partner shuts down during arguments? Stonewalling

By · Last updated

When your partner shuts down during arguments, you can't know their reason from outside, but you can look at what their silence does in you. People often call this stonewalling.

Rules this may be

You raised something small, and their answers got short. They said I'm fine and went to the other room. An hour later they are polite and say very little. You follow them, or you are careful with every word, or you go silent yourself. By bedtime nothing has been said.

This library does not read a person who is not here, so this page is about your side of it.

One limit first. If silence is used to punish you or to control what you do, or you are afraid of what follows it, none of this page applies. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

What you do when they go quiet

You may have a usual move.

You pursue. You ask what is wrong, then ask again, then ask in a sharper voice.

Or you smooth. You apologize for something, anything, so the evening can restart.

Or you go quiet too, and the two of you pass in the hall. I shut down and go quiet instead of saying what's going on with me.

People call their part stonewalling. That is a name for what it looks like. It does not say what it is for, on their side or yours.

Each move can cost something. Pursuing may get more silence. Smoothing may leave the original subject unraised for good. Going quiet may make two silent people.

What their silence may be touching in you

Peace

"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."

Their silence may read as upset, and their upset may be what you most want to end. Under Peace, you may give up what you raised in order to end it. After we go cold, I'm usually the one who comes back and smooths it over.

Chosen

"I need to be chosen."

Their silence may read as being un-picked. Under Chosen, the distance itself may be what hurts, and you may pursue to close it.

Strong

"Strong is the only version of me they know."

Their silence may be something you answer in kind. Under Strong, you may close up as well, so that you are not seen to be hurt.

These are three of several, and it may be none of them. What their shutting down is for is on a page of its own, Shutting Down, and only they can answer it.

What is under the rule

Under Peace, the fear may be that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. What would answer it is being able to disappoint someone and still be alright.

Under Chosen, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. What would answer it is belonging that isn't competitive.

Under Strong, the fear may be that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. What would answer it is being seen at less than full capacity and still being held.

Three questions, in order

First, for Peace and Chosen. Would you rather have no conflict and be nobody's favorite, or be someone's favorite and have friction?

Taking no conflict is the Peace answer. Taking the favorite, friction and all, is the Chosen answer.

Second, for Peace and Strong. Protecting them, or protecting yourself?

If you smooth it over so that they won't be upset, that is the Peace answer. If it is for your own sake, that leaves Strong or Burden, and a different question separates those two: if someone helped you and literally nobody would ever know, would you accept? Yes is the Strong answer. Still no is the Burden answer.

Third, for Chosen and Strong. Which is harder: that they didn't pick you, or that people can see you're not okay?

Not picked is the Chosen answer. Seen not okay is the Strong answer.

If none of the three moves anything, there is not enough to tell yet. That is a result.

Some of this is not a rule. A partner who needs an hour before talking is asking for an hour. Being hurt by silence is ordinary. For Peace, the check is whether you do this with people who have never been angry with you.

Subtraction works on your own evidence. It can't be done on someone else from across the room.

One thing to try this week

The next time they go quiet, pay attention to what you do first.

Write it down that night: pursue, smooth, or go quiet.

Do this three times and see whether it is always the same one.

How this can look across a whole relationship is on How the Peace Rule Shows Up in Relationships.

When this may need professional support. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. Project Gina does not replace it. In the US, call or text 988.
