The Chosen rule

Fear of abandonment in relationships

By · Last updated

Fear of abandonment in relationships often looks like working to be picked again and again, even by someone who has already picked you.

What it says will happen

If I stop making myself the obvious one, I'll be passed over.

“I need to be chosen.”

A hypothesis, not a type

Things are fine, and you are not at ease. They were quiet at dinner and you spent the night going over what you might have done. When they are warm, what you feel is closer to relief than happiness. When they pull back even a little, you become funnier, kinder, more useful. I'd get so anxious the second they turned away from me.

In a relationship the Chosen rule often looks like working to be picked again and again, even by someone who has already picked you. The effort is real and so is the love. This page asks what the effort may be for.

01

What you do in the relationship

You read small signs closely. A short reply, a flat tone, an evening on their phone. Each one gets weighed.

You adjust. I've changed a lot of who I am to keep the one steady thing I have. You apologize to get the warmth back, sometimes before you know what for. When they need space, you find it very hard to give.

And you may have noticed something uncomfortable about who holds your interest. The person who is plainly glad to have you can seem to matter less than the one who keeps you guessing.

02

What it costs

On your side, the cost may be never getting to rest in it. Being picked can bring relief, and if the relief wears off, it may seem to need earning again.

On your partner's side, there may be a cost too. Someone who is watched this closely can start to feel responsible for every change in your mood. Some pull back to get room, and that can set off more reaching.

Over years, there can be a cost in who you end up with. If the reaching is where you feel most alive, steady people may get passed over for ones who hold back.

03

The rule this may be

What all the reaching may be after is this.

What it says will happen

If I stop making myself the obvious one, I'll be passed over. "I need to be chosen."

That is the Chosen rule. If it is running, being picked once does not settle anything. Each quiet evening can open the question again.

The fear under it is that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. In a relationship that fear can attach to very small things, because the person doing the selecting is right there every day.

What would answer the fear is belonging that isn't competitive. In practice that may look like being wanted on a day you did nothing to earn it, and letting that count.

04

What else it could be

Approval

Is there one specific person whose verdict runs this, or is it anyone who might pick you? Anyone is the Chosen answer. One person, someone you can name, is the Approval answer. In a relationship this takes some care, because a partner always has a name. Under Chosen it tends to be whoever is in front of you. Under Approval it is one named person, and often a parent.

Needed

Would you rather be loved and unnecessary, or necessary and taken for granted? Loved is the Chosen answer. Necessary is the Needed answer.

Peace

Would you rather have no conflict and be nobody's favorite, or be someone's favorite and have friction? Taking no conflict is the Peace answer. Taking the favorite, friction and all, is the Chosen answer.

Three things are not this rule. Grief after a real rejection is grief, and the rule, if it is there, shows in the pattern across unrelated rejections and not in one. A partner who really is affectionate one week and distant the next is a fact about them, and noticing it is accurate. And if a partner takes affection away to punish you or control you, none of this page applies. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

If nothing here describes you, that is a result. Subtraction treats an explanation that has been set aside as something learned.
