Emotionally unavailable? When they say you're never present

By · Last updated

Seeming emotionally unavailable, never present, may mean your attention is going to the work, to watching for what could go wrong, or to looking fine.

Rules this may be

They said it at dinner, and they were not angry. You're here, but you're not here. Your phone was face down. You had answered every question. You started to defend yourself, and then noticed you could not repeat what they had told you a minute before. I catch myself buried in my phone.

Your partner may also be asking for something specific that has little to do with any of this, and it is worth finding out.

01

What you do when you are with them

You are sitting with them and often thinking about something else.

You listen with part of your attention and plan with the rest. You check the phone at the table without deciding to. On a walk you are quiet, and it is not a restful quiet.

When they point it out, you put the phone away and try harder for an evening. The effort shows.

You may keep things light. You ask about their day and say yours was fine.

People call it being distracted, or married to your job.

It can cost your partner the sense that they have you. It can cost you the same thing. Being told you are absent, by the person you come home for, is a hard thing to hear more than once.

02

What your absence may be protecting

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

Your attention may be on what is unfinished. Under Output, an evening of only being together produces nothing, and your mind may go back to where things get made.

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

Your attention may be on what could go wrong tomorrow. Under Ahead, being fully in one conversation means nobody is watching the rest. Most days I'm stressed from the start, just trying to keep everything balanced.

Strong

"Strong is the only version of me they know."

Being present may mean being seen as you are tonight. Under Strong, keeping part of yourself elsewhere may be how the tired or worried part stays out of view. I'm not good at letting them know what I actually feel.

It may be something else, or nothing that needs a name.

03

What is under the rule

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.

Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.

Under Strong, the fear may be that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. What would answer it is being seen at less than full capacity and still being held.

04

Three questions, in order

First, for Output and Ahead. Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered?

Not producing is the Output answer. Not covered is the Ahead answer.

Second, for Output and Strong. Which is harder: having nothing to show, or being seen struggling to get it done?

Nothing to show is the Output answer. Being seen struggling is the Strong answer.

Third, for Ahead and Strong. Is it that something might go wrong, or that someone might see you're not coping?

Something might go wrong is the Ahead answer. Someone might see is the Strong answer.

If none of the three moves anything, there is not enough to tell, and that is a result.

Some of this is not a rule. A hard season at work can take anyone's attention for a while. Your partner's complaint is also their experience, and it can be accurate about the evenings without telling you why. For Ahead, the check is whether the watching continues when things are stable.

Asking these in order is subtraction. Each answer lets one explanation go.

05

One thing to try this week

Ask your partner for one example from this week, and only one.

Listen to it without explaining. Write it down afterward.

Under it, write where your attention was at that moment, as exactly as you can remember.
