The light is off and you are tired. Ten minutes later you are composing an email. Then you are back in a conversation from this afternoon, saying it better. You check the clock and work out how many hours are left. Falling asleep is no problem. It's when I wake up in the night and my brain switches on.
Sleep itself is a medical subject, and this page has nothing to say about how to sleep.
If you have been sleeping badly for weeks, that belongs with a doctor or a licensed clinician, and licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
01
What you do in the dark
It may follow a pattern you could describe by now.
You plan. Tomorrow's meeting, the route, the thing you must not forget. You get up to write one item down and come back with four.
Or you review. What you said, what they meant, the mistake in the report.
You reach for the phone.
People tell you to stop thinking.
Apart from the tiredness, it can cost you the next day's patience. The people you live with may get the shorter version of you.
02
What the thinking may be for
"Stillness is where it catches me."
The thinking may be preparation. Under Ahead, night may be the one time nothing is being managed, and the managing may start up anyway. My mind doesn't stop.
Read about Ahead →"Being wrong isn't a mistake. It feels like a verdict."
The thinking may be correction. Under Right, the day's small errors may get gone over until each has an answer. After I've been around people I go back over what I said, worried some of it came out wrong.
Read about Right →Other rules are possible, and it may be none. Plenty of sleeplessness has plain causes that a doctor would ask about first.
03
What is under the rule
Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.
Under Right, the fear may be that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about. What would answer it is being able to remain yourself while someone thinks you are wrong.
04
One question that separates them
A small correction in a meeting. Is the sting about being wrong, or about not having seen it coming?
Being wrong is the Right answer. Not having seen it coming is the Ahead answer.
If neither is familiar, there is not enough to tell. That is a result.
A busy mind before a big day is ordinary. For Ahead, in a period that really is unstable, staying alert fits the facts, and the check is whether it continues when things are stable. For Right, high standards where precision really matters are not the rule, and the check is whether the reaction is in proportion outside that work.
Subtraction can't help anyone sleep. It can only narrow down what the wakefulness is busy with.

One thing to try this week
Each morning this week, before the day starts, take a pen and paper.
Write down the subject you remember your mind going to in the night, and a T if it was about tomorrow or a Y if it was about the day just gone.
At the end of the week, see which letter you wrote more often.
What the reviewing looks like in the daytime is on I Overthink Every Conversation After It Ends.
