Meaning in suffering: what Viktor Frankl meant

By · Last updated

Viktor Frankl was a psychiatrist from Vienna who survived Nazi concentration camps. He believed that when we can't change a painful situation, we can still choose how we carry it. That choice, he said, can give the suffering meaning.

01

What this does NOT mean

  • It doesn't mean suffering is good.
  • It doesn't mean you should accept harm you can change. If you can change it, change it.
  • It doesn't mean pain has to have a reason.

02

What it does mean

When something can't be undone, like a death or an illness, you still have a say in what you do next. Who you become while carrying it can matter, to you and to others.

03

A story Frankl told

Frankl wrote about a man who couldn't get over his wife's death. You can read it on the man who outlived his wife.

04

Try this

Think of something hard you can't change. Ask: "Who am I being while I carry this, and who do I want to be?"

When this may need professional support. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. Project Gina does not replace it. In the US, call or text 988. Grief and depression can look alike. If low mood lasts most days for two weeks or more, talk to a doctor. In a crisis, call or text 988 (US).
