It has been four days. Someone at the door takes your hands and tells you there is a reason for everything. You thank them. After they have gone you stand in the hall for a while.
This page is the limit on everything else in this section.
01
When the loss is fresh
A loss is real first, and it may be the whole answer. There may be nothing under it to find.
In Frankl's story of the widowed doctor, two years had passed. And what Frankl said to him started from the man's own answer to a question.
02
When someone is being harmed
A meaning found in suffering is not an argument for putting up with harm.
Frankl was plain about this. He stressed that finding meaning in suffering applies only when the suffering can't be avoided, and that he was not proposing anyone suffer unnecessarily.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
03
When there is a crisis
A crisis is not a time for meaning. If you are in crisis, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
04
When it comes from somebody else
Meaning is found by the person it belongs to. It can't be handed over.
That there is a reason for everything is something one person says to another. It is not what this section means by meaning. Frankl began with a question, and the man answered it.
05
When you are asking it of yourself
You may be the one asking yourself what the lesson is. Nothing says there has to be one, and nothing says when.
If a meaning comes early and it is your own, nothing on this page argues with it.
06
What is left
Nothing has to be made of a loss. Some things stay losses.
Subtraction removes explanations that do not hold, and a loss is not an explanation.
