Does therapy actually work? An honest answer

By · Last updated

Whether therapy actually works is a fair question, and the method here is built to be checked and is allowed to come back with nothing.

You have a low tolerance for this sort of thing. Nine rules sounds like one more system with a number in its name. You are reading this page mainly to find the place where it asks you to believe something.

Doubt is a reasonable way to come at it.

01

What you are not asked to believe

That you have one of nine rules. No page says so, and the method can reject all nine.

That these are scientific categories. The terms are this library's own. They are not presented as clinical consensus, and for anything clinical the library links out.

Anything about how brains or bodies work. The pages describe and do not explain.

02

What can be checked

Every page that offers an explanation offers at least two, and, where there is one, gives the question that separates them. You can ask it and see whether it does.

An explanation has to say what would count against it. What "Disconfirming Evidence" Means and Why It Matters sets that out.

"Not enough to tell" is a result the method is allowed to return. A system that always produces an answer deserves your suspicion.

03

Who it tends to suit

Someone who wants to see the reasoning and not only the conclusion.

Someone who prefers plain language. Every page here is written in it, and every listing states facts with dates, not adjectives.

04

Who it tends not to suit

Someone who wants certainty. This offers a working answer that can be overturned.

Someone in crisis. Licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

05

One separate thing, for any reader

Wanting evidence is not a rule. It is good practice.

If, separately, a small correction tends to sting more than it seems to warrant, two of the nine are candidates, among others. Under Right, the fear is that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about. Under Ahead, the fear is that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again.

A small correction in a meeting. Is the sting about being wrong, or about not having seen it coming? Being wrong is the Right answer. Not having seen it coming is the Ahead answer. If neither fits, there is not enough to tell, and you can leave it there.

When this may need professional support. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. Project Gina does not replace it. In the US, call or text 988.
