How do you know if therapy is working?

By · Last updated

You may know therapy is working if you catch the pattern sooner and do something different a little more often, even while it still shows up.

A month in, you can't tell. You like the sessions. You feel better that day. By the weekend you are doing the usual thing. Someone asks if it is helping, and you say I think so.

That is a modest test on purpose.

01

What may count as a sign

You notice sooner. What took you a day to see now takes an hour, or you see it while it is happening.

The old move is a little shorter, or a little less frequent.

Now and then you do something else, and nothing terrible follows.

What the pattern was costing you eases somewhat.

02

What does not count

Feeling good after a session. That is pleasant, and it is not the same thing.

Liking the practitioner. That helps, and it is also not the same thing.

Understanding more. You may already have had plenty of understanding. The question is whether anything you do has changed.

The pattern never showing up. It can come back on a hard day long after things have improved, and that has its own page.

03

Who can tell

You, mostly. The people you live with may notice before you do.

The practitioner you're seeing sees part of it. They see you only in sessions.

You can ask the practitioner directly how they think it is going, and say how you think it is going.

04

When it is not working

Not working and wrong fit can be different things. How to Know If It's the Wrong Fit gives the signs of a wrong fit.

No change at all over a good stretch is information. It is a fair thing to raise with the practitioner.

What this page can't give you

A timeline. Nothing here says how many sessions anything takes.

If things are getting worse, and not merely staying the same, that is a reason to go toward a licensed clinician. Licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

When it may be the wrong fit is on How to Know If It's the Wrong Fit.

Your next step

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
