Three good weeks. You were catching it early, and twice you did something else entirely. Then one bad Tuesday, and you ran the whole thing as though you had never heard of it. I get somewhere, then I slide back, then I climb out again. The back-and-forth wears me down.
The word is borrowed, and it needs a caution.
01
A caution about the word
If you came here about drinking, drugs or another dependence, relapse means something else, and this page is not about it. That belongs with the people supporting your recovery, or with a doctor. Licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
02
What it means here
Only this: a pattern that had gone quiet ran again.
Think of a train. It can brake hard and still travel a long way before it stops, because of everything moving behind it. A full run after three quiet weeks is the same kind of thing. The brake is on, and what was already moving is still arriving.
So the pattern coming back is part of how this goes. It is the thing you get to catch, again.
03
What tends to happen
You take it as proof that the three weeks were not real.
You stop logging, since there is nothing good to log.
Both are understandable, and both cost you the most useful entry you have had in a month.
04
What to do
Log it. A full run after three quiet weeks is a clear scene.
Look at what was different. A hard week, a bad night, a particular person. That is not an excuse. It may show you when the pattern runs most easily.
Of your three steps, go back to the one that is about catching. Catch it once. That is enough to ask of this week.
05
What it is evidence of
It is one more scene for subtraction. It may fit what was named. If the thing that came back keeps looking unlike what was named, there may not have been enough to tell the first time, and that is worth noting.
If you are working with a practitioner, this is a fair thing to bring to them.
What to do when you only notice afterward is on When You Catch It Too Late.
When you want to go back to the old way
Wanting to go back to the old way makes sense, since the old way worked, and what matters is whether you go back knowing what it is for.
