Marriage feels like roommates? Why, and what helps

By · Last updated

When your marriage feels like roommates, it can seem nothing is wrong and nothing is happening, and each of you may be keeping the distance for a reason.

Rules this may be

You run the house well together. The calendar is shared and the bills are paid. You talk about logistics. In the evening you sit in the same room on separate screens, and it is perfectly pleasant. There wasn't one moment. The distance built up a little at a time until it was just how we lived.

This page is for both of you.

01

What each of you does

You hand things off. Who is driving, what is for dinner, when the plumber is coming.

You don't fight. There is nothing to fight about.

You save the real news of your day for someone else, or for nobody. When one of you says let's do something, you both agree, and the week fills up.

People say this is what long relationships turn into. Sometimes that is true, and for some couples a quiet partnership is what both want.

The cost, if it is one, is that each of you may be lonely in company and unsure whether the other one minds.

02

What the distance may be protecting

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

The evenings may go to work, the house or a project. Under Output, the fear is that without achievement you don't matter. An empty hour with another person may be harder than a full one alone.

Peace

"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."

Keeping it to logistics may keep it calm. Under Peace, the fear is that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. Anything deeper could bring something up.

Strong

"Strong is the only version of me they know."

Not saying how you are may be a habit of composure. Under Strong, the fear is that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have.

Either of you may be near any of these, or near another rule, or none.

03

How the two can lock together

One of you is busy. The other may take the busyness to mean there is no room, and stop bringing things.

The first may notice that nothing is being brought, take it that all is well, and stay busy.

Each of you may be adjusting to a message the other never sent.

04

Three questions, each for one pair

Answer separately, each about yourself.

Output or Peace. If you stopped and nobody was upset at all, would you be alright? Yes is the Peace answer. No, it is the stopping, is the Output answer.

Output or Strong. Which is harder: having nothing to show, or being seen struggling to get it done? Nothing to show is the Output answer. Being seen struggling is the Strong answer.

Peace or Strong. Protecting them, or protecting yourself? Protecting them from being upset is the Peace answer. Protecting yourself leaves Strong or Burden, and a different question sorts those two.

If none of them sorts anything, there is not enough to tell yet.

Much of this can be ordinary. Small children, long hours and plain tiredness can do it with no rule involved. A hard season is a full explanation.

Subtraction works from actual evenings, more than one, and removes the explanations that don't hold.

What it can look like when both of you are the capable one is on When Both of You Are the Strong One.
