Scared to change? When the next step frightens you

By · Last updated

When you're scared to change and the next step frightens you, the fear may show what is being protected, and the answer is a smaller experiment.

You wrote the experiment down on Sunday. It looked reasonable. It is now Thursday, and each day you have found a reason why today was not the day. I'll start working on it, and when it gets hard I quit.

Being scared of it does not mean you are doing it wrong.

01

What tends to happen

You put it off, and then judge yourself for putting it off.

Or you decide to force it, pick the hardest version, and it goes badly.

Neither is required. The fear may be doing what it has long done, which is keeping you away from the thing it says will go wrong.

02

What the fear tells you

It may tell you roughly where the condition is. If telling a friend you are not okay is what frightens you, that may point toward Strong, where the fear is that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. If saying no to a small request is what frightens you, that may point toward Peace, where the fear is that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong.

It may also point at something else, or at ordinary nerves. It is one piece of evidence and no more.

03

What to do

Make it smaller. There are three ways. Ask for less. Choose a safer person. Make it shorter.

If you are working with a practitioner, you can raise it there.

Let it wait if it needs to. Nothing is lost by a week. An experiment that isn't doable yet is the wrong size.

04

What not to do

Don't push through on willpower. A test that has to be forced is too big for now.

05

When the fear is right

Some fear is accurate. If what scares you is how a particular person will react, and they have given you reason, that is not a rule and not an experiment. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

If the fear is wide and does not ease, licensed mental-health care is the right door.

If you are working with a practitioner, this is a fair thing to bring to them.

A fear that keeps not fitting what was named is evidence as well. Subtraction counts it, and there may not have been enough to tell at first.

How an experiment is set up is on How to Run a Disconfirming Experiment.
