How to make change stick when the insight fades

By · Last updated

To make change stick when the insight fades, remember it is usually the clear feeling wearing off and not the finding, and what you wrote down is still there.

For a week you saw it everywhere. You could have explained it to a stranger. Now you reach for the exact words and they are gone, and yesterday you did the old thing without noticing until bedtime. We'll get somewhere, and then normal life starts back up and it's gone.

A feeling of clarity and a finding are two things, and only the first one fades.

01

What tends to happen

The sharpness goes first. You remember that it made sense and not quite how.

Then ordinary life fills back in. Work, the house, other people. Nothing reminds you.

Then the pattern runs once without being caught, and you conclude that the session didn't take.

02

What to do

Read what you wrote down again. On paper, it does not depend on your memory of the moment.

Go back to the one step that is always there: catch the pattern once, live, and log it. One catch may do more than another rereading.

Don't try to get the feeling back. What you left the session with is a name and three steps, and those can be used on a dull Tuesday as well as a bright one.

03

What it does not mean

It does not mean the finding was wrong. It also does not prove it was right. What was named came from subtraction and stays a working answer. If, when you do catch the pattern, it keeps failing to fit what was named, that is worth noting.

If you are working with a practitioner, this is a fair thing to bring to them.

If what has faded is more than clarity, and you are finding it hard to get through the days, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

Why knowing and changing come apart is on Insight Is Not the Same as Change.
