A friend tells you wonderful news. You say the right thing, and you feel flat. At the celebration, the goodbye, the long-awaited day, you do what the moment calls for and notice that nothing is happening in you. You are not sad. You are not much of anything. On paper my life is good. I just can't feel it.
It may also be nothing more than a tired stretch or a hard one.
If you have felt flat for weeks, or nothing interests you anymore, that belongs with a doctor or a licensed clinician. Licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
01
What you do when nothing comes
You may have learned to cover it.
You produce the expression. You say you are thrilled, or so sorry. You hit the right note and move the conversation along.
Afterward you may wonder what is wrong with you. You may test yourself with a sad film or an old photograph.
People mostly don't call it anything, because it may not show.
It can cost you the occasions themselves, which pass without registering. And someone close to you may sense the gap and take it personally.
02
What the flatness may be protecting
"Strong is the only version of me they know."
Looking okay may have become automatic. Under Strong, composure can arrive before you have decided anything, and it may arrive on good occasions as well as hard ones. I went through the motions.
Read about Strong →"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."
The moment may not count because nothing is being made in it. Under Output, a finished thing can go flat quickly, and a celebration is about something finished. When something goes well I don't kick back and enjoy it. I'm already on to what's next.
Read about Output →Other rules are possible, and it may well be no rule.
03
What is under the rule
Under Strong, the fear may be that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. What would answer it is being seen at less than full capacity and still being held.
Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.
Trying to feel more answers neither. Effort may not be what is missing.
04
One question that separates them
Which is harder: having nothing to show, or being seen struggling to get it done?
Nothing to show is the Output answer. Being seen struggling is the Strong answer.
If the question does not reach it, there is not enough to tell from here. That is a result.
Not every flat moment is a rule. Some occasions are simply less moving than they are supposed to be. For Strong, what to look at is cost, and whether the composure is costing you support you need. For Output, what tells you more is what happens when the producing stops.
This is subtraction at its smallest. One explanation is looked at, and it stays or it goes.

One thing to try this week
Three times this week, at a moment when you would expect to feel something, write one line.
Put down what happened and what you noticed in yourself, even if the word is nothing.
Keep the three lines. Read them at the end of the week.
What it looks like to analyze a feeling in place of saying it is on Intellectualizing.
