Years of therapy and still stuck? Here's why

By · Last updated

After years of therapy, you may still be stuck because the therapy was aimed at the problem you could see. Years of good work on the wrong layer feels productive the whole time and changes very little.

Three possibilities, and none of them is "therapy doesn't work." The work went to the symptom rather than the rule.

The explanation you were given was plausible and incomplete. Or the modality was a mismatch for what is actually there, and talking about a body-held pattern for five years is like describing a splinter instead of removing it.

01

The short answer

Someone said this almost word for word on a call: "I have five years of therapy proving that all my shit comes from my childhood. I know exactly why I do this. I still do this." That is not failure. That is a complete description with no intervention attached.

What this can look like

Tap any that sound like you.

03

Why awareness is not enough

Talk therapy is extraordinarily good at producing understanding. Understanding lives in the explaining part of you. The pattern lives in the protecting part, which learned its rule before you had words and does not update on words. More on why naming does not change it.

04

Several things may be underneath

  • The work was aimed at a strategy. You addressed people-pleasing, or boundaries, or communication. The rule those were serving is untouched.
  • The explanation is right about the past and silent about the mechanism. Knowing where a rule came from is not the same as knowing what it is, or what would disconfirm it now.
  • Modality mismatch. Some patterns are held in the body and do not move through conversation. That is a routing problem, not a you problem. Therapy vs. coaching vs. somatic work.
  • A second rule is running. The first was real and got handled. The second was never named.
  • Nothing has been tested against real life. The explanation exists inside the hour. It has never been caught in the act.

05

Same experience, different causes

Wrong layer

Years on "boundaries." The rule was Chosen; every boundary felt like risking the relationship.

Wrong modality

Freeze response in the body. Talked about brilliantly. Never touched.

Second rule

Output was handled. Approval underneath it never came up.

06

What to notice next time it happens

Do not try to stop it. Try to catch it.

  1. What was the exact trigger? The second, not the topic.
  2. What did your body do first?
  3. What did the moment seem to mean about you?
  4. What did you immediately want to do?
  5. What were you protecting against? What would have happened if you had not?

07

How subtraction approaches it

Subtraction does not add another explanation. It takes the ones you have, plus moments from your actual week, and removes the explanations that cannot account for what keeps happening. What survives can be written down plainly enough to recognize the next time it fires. How subtraction works.

And to be plain: if what you need is more therapy with the right person, that is a good answer. Therapy is not the competitor here. What Is Talk Therapy? explains how to check a therapist's license.

Is this for people who've "done the work"?

Yes, it is for people who have done a great deal of work, since it starts from the gap between understanding a pattern and being free of it.

When this may need professional support. Therapy is often exactly right. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door.
