Resentful that no one notices what you do?

By · Last updated

Resentment that no one notices what you do often follows years of hiding what you need, giving without being asked, or waiting to be the one someone thinks of.

Rules this may be

You have been worn out for weeks and nobody has said a word. You cleared the table, booked the appointments, remembered the thing everyone else forgot, and the evening went on as though all of that happens by itself. Nobody asked how you are. You are furious. You can't say so, because you never told anyone there was anything to notice. Yes, I pick it all up. That doesn't mean I want to be the one carrying it every single time.

The anger may be the most accurate thing you have felt in a while. What it is about is the part worth a closer look.

01

What you do instead of saying it

The anger is what you notice. Before it comes a set of things you do.

You go quiet and efficient. You do the dishes a little louder than they need. You say fine in a voice that isn't. You wait to see who will ask, and you count how long it takes. When someone finally does ask what is wrong, you say nothing, I'm just tired.

I don't want to have to ask. Somewhere in there may be a belief that care only counts when it comes unprompted, and that care you had to ask for is worth less.

Meanwhile the other people are working from what you show them, and what you show them is someone who has it covered. They may not be ignoring a signal. There may not have been one. Everybody just figured I had it covered, and that's where the anger came from.

When the anger does come out, it can come out over something small. Then everyone, you included, finds it easy to dismiss. And you judge yourself for it almost as fast as you feel it.

02

What being noticed may have been for

One layer down is what being noticed was supposed to do for you. It would not be the same thing under each rule.

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

If giving is how you hold your place, the giving was meant to register. Under Needed, when nobody sees it, all that work may feel like it bought nothing.

Burden

"Asking creates a debt I don't want to carry."

If you can't ask, being noticed is the only way left for a need of yours to be met, and it depends on someone else guessing. Under Burden the anger may be at how often they guess wrong.

Chosen

"I need to be chosen."

Being noticed can feel like being picked. Under Chosen it may have little to do with the dishes. It may be about not being the one somebody thought of. I just want somebody to care about me the way I care about everybody else.

One more possibility sits close by. If what you have been hiding is how hard things are, more than what you need, Strong is the page to read.

03

What is under the rule

Further down, each rule has a fear that turns an ordinary oversight into something much heavier.

Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. Usefulness nobody notices leaves you doing all of it without the place it was meant to secure.

Under Burden, the fear may be that your needs make you too much, and too much gets left. So the need stays hidden, and then nobody sees it, and that hurts too.

Under Chosen, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select.

What would answer them is different in each case: being wanted and not required, receiving without owing, belonging that isn't a competition.

04

Two questions, in order

First. When someone offers to help you, what is the first thought?

Go back to the last time somebody did notice, and offered. They shouldn't have to is the Needed answer. Now I owe them is the Burden answer. Either one points at something uncomfortable. The noticing you are angry about not getting may be noticing you turned down when it came.

Second. Would you rather be loved and unnecessary, or necessary and taken for granted?

Taken for granted is the feeling this page opened with, so answer slowly. If you would still take necessary, even at that price, that is the Needed answer. If you would give up being needed altogether to be plainly loved, that is the Chosen answer.

This is subtraction in miniature. You are not hunting for the explanation that sounds best. You are removing the ones that don't hold. More than one can be left standing, and if neither question moved anything, there is not enough to tell yet.

Sometimes the plain reading is the right one. Some people do take more than they give and don't look up. If you have said it clearly, more than once, and nothing changed, that is information about them and not a rule in you.

05

One thing to try this week

Pick one thing you have been waiting for someone to notice, and say it in one plain sentence. I'm worn out, and I need you to take the evenings this week. No hint, no sigh, no waiting to see.

Then watch two things. One is what they do. The other is what it was like to say it.

Write it down that night.
