They ask whether you are okay with them. You say yes. They ask again on Thursday, and again after you were quiet at dinner. You have a set of phrases by now. You say them warmly, and you can hear yourself getting tired. I just don't want to have the resentment.
What the asking is about on their side is theirs to find out, and this page stays with yours.
01
What you do when they ask
You answer, every time.
You have learned what works: the tone, the touch, the particular sentence. You watch for the signs and sometimes reassure before they ask. You arrange your face in the evenings so there will be nothing to ask about.
Some days you resent it, and then feel guilty for resenting someone who is only asking.
People call them needy, or insecure. Those words are about them, and they don't explain why you keep answering.
It can wear you out. It may also be that the reassurance does not last, however well you give it.
02
What the reassuring may be doing for you
"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"
Being the one who can calm them may matter to you. Under Needed, a partner who no longer asked might leave you unsure of your place.
Read about Needed →"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."
Their asking may be hard for you to be near. Under Peace, you may reassure quickly to bring the room back to calm, more than to answer the question.
Read about Peace →"I need to be chosen."
Being the one they come to may matter to you. Under Chosen, their doubt about the two of you may land as a doubt about whether you are still the one they would pick.
Read about Chosen →These are three of several, and it may be none. What may be under asking of this kind is described on I Need Reassurance When Nothing Is Wrong, which offers several possibilities and settles on none. Nobody can tell which from outside, including you.

What is under the rule
Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. What would answer it is being wanted rather than required.
Under Peace, the fear may be that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. What would answer it is being able to disappoint someone and still be alright.
Under Chosen, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. What would answer it is belonging that isn't competitive.

Three questions, one for each pair
Needed or Peace. If they were completely happy and didn't need you at all, how would that land?
Empty, or quietly displaced, is the Needed answer. Relieved is the Peace answer.
Chosen or Needed. Would you rather be loved and unnecessary, or necessary and taken for granted?
Loved is the Chosen answer. Necessary is the Needed answer.
Peace or Chosen. Would you rather have no conflict and be nobody's favorite, or be someone's favorite and have friction?
Taking no conflict is the Peace answer. Taking the favorite is the Chosen answer.
If their being happy without needing you would simply be nice, and neither of the other two pulls, there may be nothing here on your side, and that is a result. Not enough to tell is a result too.
Some of this is not a rule. Comforting someone you love is ordinary. Being tired of doing it daily is ordinary as well. And if the questions are about where you have been and who you were with, and saying the wrong thing has consequences, that is a different situation. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
This is subtraction applied to the only person you have evidence about, which is you.

One thing to try this week
The next time they ask, notice what you feel in the second before you answer.
That evening, write one word for it: needed, worried, picked, tired, or something else.
Collect a week of words before you read them.
What this can be like from their side is on I Need Reassurance When Nothing Is Wrong.
