You do most of it, and you are tired. You keep a quiet tally you are a little ashamed of. When your partner says I've got it, something in you drops instead of lifting. And you are not sure what you would be to them if they needed nothing from you.
In a relationship the Needed rule often looks like doing everything for a partner, and then finding it hard to believe they would stay for any other reason. It describes a possibility, not a finding.
01
What you do in the relationship
Under the tiredness is a long list of things you do without being asked.
You run the calendar, the bills, the birthdays for their family. You notice what they are about to need and have it ready. If I don't do it, nobody does it. When they are struggling you are at your best, clear and energetic. When they try to look after you, you wave it off, or let them and then quietly redo it.
It can start before the relationship does. You may find you are drawn to people who are in some kind of trouble, and less sure what to do with someone who is fine. The more there is to fix, the more I'm drawn in. Somewhere in me I think if I can get them okay, I'll finally be okay too.
02
What it costs
The tally is the first cost. I end up doing it for them, like a parent would, and then I'm irritated the whole time I'm doing it. You give a great deal, the giving is never quite returned, and the resentment arrives and is judged the moment it does. It may be hard to return, because you may have made it very hard to give you anything.
The second is quieter. A relationship built on one person being needed can struggle when that person rests, or gets sick, or simply stops. It can also struggle when the other person gets better. If you chose someone because they needed you, their recovery can feel, oddly, like a threat. That is worth noticing if it has ever happened to you.
The third is what your partner gets. Being looked after this thoroughly can feel like love. It can also feel like not being trusted to manage. And you may not even want the arrangement you built: they'll go along with whatever I decide. What I want is for them to come up with something, just once.

The rule this may be
Go one layer further, to what the doing may be for.
What it says will happen
If they stop needing me, there's no reason for me to be here. "If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"
That is the Needed rule. Under it, being needed and being loved feel like the same thing, so the surest way to keep one is to keep supplying the other. The thought under it can be very plain. If nobody needs anything from you, you may not be sure what you are to them.
Under the rule is a fear, that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. In a relationship it may take the form that if you stopped being useful, you would be left. That may be why I've got it lands the way it does. It is probably meant kindly. It may be heard as you are not required here.
What would answer the fear is being wanted and not required. A partner who needs nothing from you this week and is still glad you walked in.

What else it could be
Doing everything can be a way of making sure a partner is never unhappy with you. If they were completely happy and didn't need you at all, how would that land? Relieved is the Peace answer. Empty, or quietly displaced, is the Needed answer.
Read about Peace →Giving constantly can also be a way of never having to receive. When someone offers to help you, what is the first thought? They shouldn't have to is the Needed answer. Now I owe them is the Burden answer. These two often run together.
Read about Burden →Would you rather be loved and unnecessary, or necessary and taken for granted? If you would take loved, even with nothing to do, that is the Chosen answer.
Read about Chosen →Two things are not this rule. Some seasons in a relationship really are lopsided, with a new baby, an illness, or a lost job, and carrying more for a while is what partners do. And if you do everything because your partner makes you pay when you don't, that is not a rule in you.The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
This is subtraction in miniature. You are not hunting for the explanation that sounds best. You are removing the ones that don't hold.
