You have handed over the keys, to the office or to the house. For years there was a place to be and people who expected you. Now the week is open. Friends say you must be excited, and you nod. I've never done anything like this just for myself.
Anyone would be unsettled by this much changing at once, and grief for what ended needs no further explanation.
01
What you do with a new start
You may look for someone to take care of.
You offer to help with the grandchildren, the neighbor, the committee. You are glad to be asked, and a little lost on the days you are not.
Or you prepare. You read about every risk. You keep the plans small, so that less can go wrong.
When people ask what you want, you may find the question hard.
People say the time is yours now, or that you can do anything you want.
It can cost you the chance to find out what you would choose. It can also wear on the people you help, if the helping is more than they asked for.
02
What the fear may be about
"Stillness is where it catches me."
A new start comes with no history to go on. Under Ahead, you may be watching for what could go wrong. On paper it's all good. It's still scary not knowing what's next.
Read about Ahead →"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"
The people who needed you may need you less. Under Needed, the open week is hard because nobody is counting on you in it. I can't be the one who helps everybody. I keep trying anyway.
Read about Needed →These are two of several, and it may be neither.
03
What is under the rule
Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.
Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. What would answer it is being wanted rather than required.
04
One question that separates them
Do you step in because they need you, or because something might go wrong if you don't?
They need me is the Needed answer. Something might go wrong is the Ahead answer.
If you don't step in much at all, the question may not fit, and there is not enough to tell. That is a result.
A good part of this is not a rule. Some worries are accurate, about money or about health, and the right help for those may be a financial counselor or a doctor. For Ahead, the check is whether the watchfulness continues when things are stable.
The question above is subtraction in one step. It can take one of two explanations away.
05
One thing to try this week
Write down one thing you would do this month if nobody needed anything from you and nothing could go wrong.
Under it, write the first objection that comes to mind.
Look at whether the objection is about someone else, or about risk.
What stopping work can be like is on After Retiring.
