Starting over at 40

By · Last updated

When you are starting over at 40, the fear may be about being unprepared for what comes next, or about whether the years so far still count. People often call this a midlife crisis.

Rules this may be

The marriage ended, or the career did, or the business. You are in a smaller place with a few boxes still taped. People you know are sending invitations to things. You are filling out a form that asks for your experience, and you are not sure what to put. What I've got now feels like the consolation prize for the life I was supposed to have.

Starting again is hard work in plain practical ways, and grief for what ended is part of it.

01

What you do when you start again

You may be doing it in a hurry.

You take the first job, the first apartment, the first plan. You say yes fast so that the empty stretch is short. Or you stall, researching every option, because getting it wrong seems like too much to risk.

You avoid people who knew you before. You rehearse a short account of what happened.

People say it is brave, or that the best is ahead.

Hurrying can cost you a choice you would have made differently with a month more. Stalling can cost you the month. And measuring everything against the old life all day can leave little attention for the new one.

02

What the fear may be about

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

You may feel caught unprepared. Under Ahead, the life you had was the plan, and without it you are behind and unprepared at once.

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

You may feel you have nothing to show. Under Output, years that ended this way can seem not to count, and the pressure is to produce something quickly that does. For years I felt less than, like I had to do something extra to prove myself. I didn't know that's what I was fighting.

Other rules can be here, and it may be none. A hard year is a hard year.

03

What is under the rule

Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.

04

One question that separates them

Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered?

Not producing is the Output answer. Not covered is the Ahead answer.

At a time like this it may be both. Then there is not enough to tell yet, and that is a result.

Much of this is not a rule. Money may really be tight, and a financial counselor may be the right help for that. This is an unstable period by any measure, and for Ahead the check is whether the watchfulness continues once things settle. Missing the life you had is grief, and it needs no rule.

Subtraction treats those as facts and leaves them alone. The question is only for whatever goes beyond them.

05

One thing to try this week

When the thought that it is too late comes this week, write down what you were doing just before it came.

One line each time.

After a week, read them and see what tends to bring it on.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
