Holiday anxiety and holiday depression

By · Last updated

Holiday anxiety or depression is often less about the day than the job you do on it: earning a verdict, keeping the table calm, or running it all.

Rules this may be

The dread starts weeks out, and you are worn out before any of it has begun. You snap at your own household as it gets closer. When the day comes, everyone says it was wonderful, and you cry in the car, or you can hardly do anything for two days. Part of you wishes the whole season away, and you feel guilty for that.

The workload is real. It doesn't explain the dread beforehand or the days it takes to recover.

01

What you do that day

Under the dread is the work, so look at that first.

You plan the seating around who isn't speaking. You cook, host, refill glasses, and steer the conversation away from the same two subjects. The asks start early, and you say yes to them: family asks a favor, I've got plans, I really don't want to, and I cancel my plans and go. Or you are not going this year, and you have spent three weeks dreading the phone call in which you say so.

People call it holiday stress and advise simplifying. That helps with the cooking, not with the part that started in November.

A deer gets spooked and bolts. Two hundred yards later it drops its head and grazes. People don't. We stay in it long after the thing has passed. The two days afterward may be exactly that: the job is over, you have stopped doing it, and what it cost arrives all at once.

02

What the job may be protecting

Go one layer down, to what the work is for. The holidays put all three of these in one room, which may be why they hit so hard.

Approval

"I'm still working for someone who may not even be watching anymore."

There may be one person at that table whose verdict still counts for more than the rest. With Approval your day can go the way that person goes.

Peace

"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."

You may be on duty for the whole table, tracking every tone. Under Peace the work may be preventing a scene.

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

You may be the one who makes it happen, and that may be the point. If it doesn't get done by me, it doesn't get done. With Needed, someone else offering to host may not land as relief.

What is under the rule

Further down is the fear each job may be managing, and it may be why one afternoon can cost a month.

Under Approval, it may be that without that person's verdict you don't know what you are worth. Under Peace, that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. Under Needed, that without your usefulness there is no reason for you.

The call to say you are not coming runs into the same three. You may be bracing for one person's reaction, or for upsetting everyone, or for finding out it goes fine without you.

04

Two questions, in order

Is it worse when they're upset with you, or when they don't need you?

Put it to the day. Your mother annoyed that the meal ran late. Or your sister announcing she will host next year and has it all under control. If the first is worse, that is the Peace answer. If the second is, that is the Needed answer. If neither is clearly worse, that counts as a result too. Approval needs a second question. Is it anyone being upset with you, or one person's verdict? Anyone is the Peace answer. One person, someone you can name, is the Approval answer. Not enough to tell is allowed, and these three are not the only rules that can be at work on a day like this.

Not everything hard about the holidays is a rule. An empty chair is grief. Being alone is being alone. Money is money. Those are heavy for their own reasons, and this page is not about them.

The questions are there to remove a candidate, not to crown one. Subtraction means taking explanations away until what is left has to carry the evidence.

05

One thing to try this week

Choose now, before the day, one job to put down. Only one.

If Approval felt nearest, plan to let one remark from that person go unanswered. If Peace did, plan to let one awkward silence at the table stay awkward. If Needed did, hand one whole dish to someone else and don't check on it.

When the day comes, watch two things: what happened at the table, and what happened in you. The second is the evidence.

Who you turn into in that house, apart from the work of the day, is in When going home makes you twelve again.
