You come back from a visit feeling like a fraud in your own life. You were sulky, or sharp, in a way you never are anywhere else. Your partner mentions it gently on the drive home. You had promised yourself it would be different this time. And now there is another visit coming, and you have been dreading it for a week.
Nothing has gone wrong with the adult. They were just not the first to respond.

What happens in that house
Begin with the moment itself.
You run a team, or a household, or both. Then your mother asks whether that is what you are wearing, and something answers before you do. Your voice goes up, or goes flat.
People call it regressing, as if you forgot to be grown up. If it happens mainly in that house, maturity is probably not the explanation.
It may not be only you, either. In some families everyone goes back to how they used to be with each other, and you may be responding to that as much as starting it.
Think of ski tracks. The first run down fresh snow cuts a groove, and every run after takes the path of least resistance into the same groove. In that house the old tracks are the deepest on the hill. That may be why deciding in advance to stay calm has not worked. The decision is made at the top. The groove is further down.

What the twelve-year-old may be protecting
One layer down is what the old answer may have been for. Three candidates here. Other rules can produce this too, and this page does not reach them.
"I'm still working for someone who may not even be watching anymore."
One parent's verdict may still be the measure, and going home puts you back in front of it. There's one critical voice from way back that still runs in my head. You'd think by now it would have gone quiet.
Read about Approval →"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."
You may have been the one who kept that house level, and going home puts you back on duty. Under Peace it may not be about any one person. It can be any tension, between anyone.
Read about Peace →"I need to be chosen."
It may be about your standing among them. I catch myself figuring out how to get my own family to like me. Who is the favorite, who gets asked about first. With Chosen it can flare when a brother or sister is praised.

What is under the rule
Lower still is the fear that may have made a rule like this worth having when you were small.
Under Approval, it may be that without that parent's verdict you don't know what you are worth. Under Peace, that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. Under Chosen, that if you are not picked, you were not enough.
A twelve-year-old had good reason to take those seriously. That is why the fraud feeling on the drive home is misplaced. The adult is not the act. The adult is just newer.

Two questions, in order
Can you name the person? If it comes down to one person's opinion of you, and you know exactly who, that suggests Approval. If it is about where you rank with whoever is in the room, that suggests Chosen.
Then ask the second, whatever the first answer was. Would you rather have no conflict and be nobody's favorite, or be someone's favorite and have friction? In that house: a visit with no tension at all, where you are nobody's favorite, or a visit where you are someone's favorite and the usual argument comes with it. Taking the visit with no tension leans toward Peace. Taking the favorite, argument and all, leans toward Chosen.
If your family is unkind to you now, reacting to that is not regression. If going home means going somewhere you are not safe, none of this page applies. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
This is subtraction in miniature. You are not hunting for the explanation that sounds best. You are removing the ones that don't hold. If neither question moved anything, that counts as a result. Not enough to tell is allowed, and none of the three may fit.

One thing to try this week
You may not be visiting this week, but there is probably a phone call. On the next one, catch the first moment it happens. Who was speaking, what they said, and what you did in the second after.
Don't try to behave better. You have probably tried that. One clear note of the first moment, written down the same day, is worth more than a whole call spent keeping quiet. Over a few calls and a visit, see what the notes have in common.
When the visit is also an occasion you are meant to enjoy, When the holidays undo you covers the rest.
