Successful but unhappy? Golden handcuffs

By · Last updated

Being successful but unhappy, as if success were a trap, can make slowing down seem impossible, since you'd stop producing or too much could go wrong.

Rules this may be

The income is good, and so is everything built on it: the house, the school, the people who depend on you. You would like to work less. You have run the numbers, and you could. Nothing has changed in three years. I could stop for the day and nothing would fall apart. I already know I won't.

Some obligations are real, and where they are, staying put is a decision and not a trap.

This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why does rest feel dangerous.

01

What you do about it

You may plan your exit often.

You set a number at which you will slow down. When you reach it, you set another. You talk about the sabbatical. You take a vacation and work through half of it.

Each year the life gets a little more expensive to step back from.

People call it golden handcuffs, and tell you it is a good problem to have.

It can cost you the reason you wanted success to begin with. The people you are doing it for may mostly see you tired.

02

What may be keeping you there

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

Slowing down may mean being less. Under Output, the role and the results are how you know who you are, and less of them is less of you.

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

Slowing down may mean being less prepared. Under Ahead, every commitment is something that could go wrong, and working at full pace is how you stay ahead of all of it. It feels like I'm constantly fighting just to hold on to what I've got.

Other rules can be here. Needed is one of them, where the fear is that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. And it may be no rule, only arithmetic.

03

What is under the rule

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.

Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.

04

One question that separates them

Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered?

Ask it about the day after you cut back. Not producing is the Output answer. Not covered is the Ahead answer.

If neither is it, there is not enough to tell yet. That counts.

Some of this is simply true. If people rely on your income and there is no margin, the numbers decide. This page is not financial advice, and a financial counselor may be the right person to go over them with. For Ahead, a period that really is unstable calls for caution, and the check is whether the watchfulness continues when things are stable.

Subtraction starts by setting the facts to one side as facts. The question is for what is left.

05

One thing to try this week

Write down what you say when someone asks why you don't slow down.

Then write what your answer would be if money were not allowed as a reason.

Keep both.
