How to get over being cheated on

By · Last updated

Getting over being cheated on starts with hurt and anger that are accurate, and under them may be a question about why you weren't picked or how you missed it.

Rules this may be

You found out, and since then you have been going back through months of ordinary days and seeing each one differently. You check things you never used to check. You are angry in the morning and blank by evening. People tell you what they would do, and nobody asks what you are thinking at three in the morning. I don't know who to trust.

Being lied to by someone you trusted is a real injury, and nothing here says you caused it or ought to get past it quickly.

Finding this out can bring you close to something heavier. If that is where you are, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

01

What you do after finding out

Most of it is what a person does with a shock.

You replay. You ask for details and then wish you had not. You go back and forth between leaving and staying, sometimes within the hour.

Inside the replaying there may be a question, and it may be one of two. One is about them and the other person: what that person had that you did not. The other is about you: how you could have been so sure and so wrong.

People will have opinions about what you ought to do. Whether to stay is yours to decide, and this page has no view on it.

The replaying can cost sleep and weeks. What it may cost beyond that depends on which question it is asking.

02

What the hurt may be carrying

Chosen

"I need to be chosen."

It may have been heard as a selection: they looked at you and at someone else, and chose. Under Chosen, the affair may become a comparison you lost. I keep asking what I could have done to make them do that.

Right

"Being wrong isn't a mistake. It feels like a verdict."

It may have been heard as proof that your judgment failed. Under Right, the worst of it may be that you believed them, and were certain. I still second guess myself on everything I do.

These are two of several, and it may be neither. What you feel may be exactly what it looks like, hurt and anger at being deceived.

03

What is under the rule

Under Chosen, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select. What would answer it is belonging that isn't competitive.

Under Right, the fear may be that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about. What would answer it is being able to remain yourself while someone thinks you are wrong.

Neither is answered by learning more details. More details may only give the question more to go over.

04

One question that separates them

Which stings more: that they chose someone else, or that you were wrong about them?

Chose someone else is the Chosen answer. Wrong about them is the Right answer.

Both may sting, and you may not be able to say which is worse yet. That is a result. So is finding that neither is at the center of it.

One thing is not a rule. Trusting less after being deceived is a fair response to what happened, and it does not need a deeper explanation.

What this question does is subtraction. It removes one reading of the hurt so that you can see what is still there.

05

One thing to try this week

Each time the replay starts this week, write down the question it is asking. One line each.

Don't answer the questions. Just collect them.

At the end of the week, count how many were about why it was not you, and how many were about how you missed it.

What can come later, if the anger has stayed, is on When You Can't Forgive Them.

Your next step

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
