The Output rule

How to stop tying your self-worth to productivity

By · Last updated

Tying your self-worth to productivity tends to loosen when you are valued, out loud, for something that produced nothing, an experience and not a technique.

What it says will happen

If I stop producing, I'll find out I was never worth anything on my own.

“If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am.”

A hypothesis, not a type

You took the vacation and brought the laptop. You started a hobby, and within a month it had goals. You tried sitting still for ten minutes a day and began tracking your streak. Someone told you that you deserve a break, and you agreed, and scheduled it for after the launch. I keep setting up one more thing I have to get done first, like that'll finally prove I'm ready.

The Output rule tends to loosen when you are valued, out loud, for something that produced nothing. That is an experience and not a technique, which may be why a better rest routine has not reached it.

01

Why what you tried didn't hold

Each attempt went the same way. The vacation got work added to it. The hobby got targets. The ten minutes got a streak to keep. Each one was turned into something that produces, so each one may have ended up serving the rule it was meant to interrupt.

Even you deserve a break may fall short. Deserving is an earning word. It says the rest was earned by the work, and that leaves the condition where it was.

02

What the rule is waiting for

The vacation, the hobby and the ten minutes all changed how time was spent. None of them touched the rule under it, which may be this.

What it says will happen

If I stop producing, I'll find out I was never worth anything on my own. "If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

Under the Output rule is a fear, that without achievement you don't matter. It can go unchallenged for a long time. You may seldom be around people while producing nothing, so there is seldom a chance to see what they make of you then.

The experience that goes against the fear is being valued, out loud, for something that produced nothing. The need under the rule is worth that doesn't require performance, and that experience is one small instance of it.

03

Three things to do

None of these is a rest plan. They are ways of putting yourself where the experience can happen.

  1. Notice the first hour. Each time you finish something this week, write down what you did in the hour after. Change nothing yet. You are finding out how quickly the next thing starts.
  1. Spend twenty minutes making nothing. Once this week, do something that has no result, no count, and nothing to show at the end. If you catch yourself measuring it, pick something else.
  1. Let a kind word stand. When someone is glad to see you, or says something warm that has nothing to do with what you got done, don't answer with an accomplishment. Say thank you and leave it there. Notice what that is like.

04

What to expect

The twenty minutes will probably be uncomfortable. Restlessness is likely, and so is a low dread once things go still. That can happen when the producing stops. It does not mean the twenty minutes went badly.

You may reach for a way to make it count: a timer, a streak, a plan to do it better next week. Seeing yourself reach is worth more than stopping.

The kind word may not register the first few times. You may hear it and feel flat. It can take several before one does.

Then some small thing may come back. Lately I've noticed myself loosening up. Small things I used to enjoy are coming back. And on a hard week the old pace is likely to return. Nothing is undone by that.

05

When this is the wrong page

These steps can go well and change nothing. If you were valued for something that produced nothing, let it stand, and the pressure to produce stayed exactly where it was, Output may not be the rule, or another may be running with it.

Two questions help here. Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered? Not covered is the Ahead answer, and the Ahead rule is the better page. And if nobody ever found out you'd done it, would you still have done it? If the point drains out of it, that is the Approval answer, and Approval has more. What the Output Rule Gets Mistaken For covers the rest.

This page has limits. If you work these hours because the bills require it, that is a fact and not a rule, and no step here changes it. And if stopping brings something much heavier than restlessness, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

The reasoning behind these steps is laid out on What Is Subtraction?
