The Output rule

Workaholic or ambitious? What it gets mistaken for

By · Last updated

Being a workaholic, tying your worth to what you produce, often gets mistaken for ambition or a strong work ethic, and for three other rules.

What it says will happen

If I stop producing, I'll find out I was never worth anything on my own.

“If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am.”

A hypothesis, not a type

Your reviews call you driven. Your family calls you a workaholic. Both think they are describing the same thing, and neither word has helped you take a day off. People say you must love what you do. Some days you do, and you would still like to know why you can't stop. Why am I so focused on work?

The Output rule gets mistaken for ambition, for a strong work ethic, and for three other rules that keep a person working for different reasons. The hours can look the same in all four cases. The reasons differ, and the reasons are what this page is about.

01

One late night, four reasons

It is ten o'clock on an ordinary evening and you are still at your desk.

Under Output, you may be there because stopping would mean a day with too little made.

Under Ahead, because something might be missed if you stop, and you would rather not be caught unprepared.

Under Approval, because one particular person will see the result.

Under Needed, because someone is depending on it, and being depended on is the point.

Someone walking past the door sees one person working late. The late night shows what you do and not why. Advice to slow down assumes one reason, and there may be four.

02

What is under each one

A layer below the desk, they separate.

Output says: if I stop producing, I'll find out I was never worth anything on my own. "If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am." The fear is that without achievement you don't matter.

Ahead: the fear is that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again.

Approval: the fear is that without their verdict you don't know what you are worth.

Needed: the fear is that without your usefulness there is no reason for you.

03

The questions that separate them

Output or Ahead: when you finish something big, what shows up first: emptiness, or the next thing you should have already started? Emptiness is Output. The next thing is Ahead.

Output or Approval: if nobody ever found out you'd done it, would you still have done it? Yes, and you still couldn't stop, is Output. If the point drains out of it, that is Approval.

Output or Needed: who's it for? If it only matters because someone needs it, that is Needed. If it would have to be done even if nobody needed it, that is Output.

These four are not the whole list. Strong can keep a person at a desk too, and it has a question of its own. Which is harder: having nothing to show, or being seen struggling to get it done? Nothing to show is Output. Being seen struggling is Strong.

Two can be running together. It is also possible that none is. The questions belong to subtraction, which looks for what can be removed before it looks for what fits.

04

Mistaken in the other direction

The people around you may read it wrong as well.

Colleagues may take it for ambition, and assume you want the next title. You may not want it at all.

At home it may be taken as a ranking, with work first and them after. That can be a fair reading of the calendar and still a wrong reading of what you feel.

You may call it drive, or discipline, and the amount you get done supports that. Neither word tells you whether you could stop if you chose to.

05

What is not a rule at all

Loving your work is not the rule. Some people work long hours, enjoy them, and rest without guilt. Effort alone is not this rule. What tells you more is what happens when the producing stops.

Needing the income is not the rule either. If the hours are what the rent takes, that is a fact about money.

Perhaps none of the four reasons for the late night was yours. That rules something out.
