When life feels meaningless: what to do first

By · Last updated

Feeling like life has no meaning is more common than people say out loud. Sometimes it comes after a big loss or change. Sometimes it shows up when everything looks fine on the outside. Either way, it's worth paying attention to.

First, safety: If "meaningless" ever turns into thoughts of not wanting to be here, please call or text 988 now. You don't have to have the words ready.

Different reasons it can happen

  • A big change took away a role. Retiring, kids leaving, a breakup, a job ending.
  • You reached a goal and it didn't feel like you expected. People often call this the arrival fallacy.
  • You've been running on empty for a long time. Exhaustion can look like meaninglessness.
  • It may be depression. Low mood most days for two weeks or more is a reason to see a doctor.

What to try first

Pick one small thing this week that matters to someone else. Make a call. Fix something. Show up for someone. Meaning often comes back through doing before it comes back as a feeling.

When this may need professional support. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. Project Gina does not replace it. In the US, call or text 988. Grief and depression can look alike. If low mood lasts most days for two weeks or more, talk to a doctor. In a crisis, call or text 988 (US).
