A friend cancels dinner an hour before. You write back that it is no problem at all. Then you spend the evening on it.
That is a way of reading the rules. It adds nothing to them.
01
Fears that are written as meanings
Look at how two of the fears, and one rule's own line, are worded.
Under Peace, the fear is that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong.
Under Chosen, it is that if you are not selected, you weren't enough to select.
Under Right, the rule's own line is "Being wrong isn't a mistake. It feels like a verdict."
Each one takes a kind of moment and says what it means about you.
02
One moment, two meanings
Take the canceled dinner.
"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."
The cancellation may be taken to mean that they are upset with you. Under Peace you may go back over the last time you saw them, looking for what you did.
Read about Peace →"I need to be chosen."
It may be taken to mean that they picked something better. Under Chosen you may be left asking whether you were enough to pick.
Read about Chosen →Would you rather have no conflict and be nobody's favorite, or be someone's favorite and have friction?
No conflict is the Peace answer. The favorite, friction and all, is the Chosen answer.
It could be another rule, such as Burden, where the fear is that your needs make you too much, and too much gets left. It could be none. Your friend may have had a long day, and you may simply have been looking forward to it. Being disappointed about a canceled dinner is ordinary.
From one evening there is not enough to tell.

Why the map matters
A meaning that shows up once is a reaction to one evening.
The same meaning showing up at work, at home and on a good day may be something else. That repetition is what subtraction works from. Meaning Mapping puts moments side by side as well.
04
What this does not say
It does not say you have a rule. Only testing against your own evidence can suggest one, and it can end at not enough to tell.
It does not say a rule is who you are. Why the Rule Is Not Your Identity is its own page.
How the nine are meant to be used is on The Nine Rules as a Map, Not a Menu.
