You found a rule that seemed to fit, and within a day it had become a thing you were. It felt like relief. Then it began explaining everything, including things it had no business explaining. It's happened enough times now that I figure it has to be something in me.
The wording is deliberate, and a good deal follows from it.
01
What a rule is
A rule is the condition a person meets in order to stay safe, worthy, or allowed to belong. It is something met, over and over. It is not a trait.
So the library says the Output rule. It does not say that someone is an Output, and no page tells you that a rule is yours. A page offers a rule as one possibility among at least two.
02
Why the difference matters
An identity explains everything and can't be checked. If you are that kind of person, every act confirms it.
A condition can be checked. It answers to particular moments. It has a fear under it. And there is an experience that would go against that fear. A trait offers nothing of the kind.
An identity also tends to stay put. A condition that was once worth meeting can stop being worth it.
03
One example
You have been the reliable one for years, and when things are hard you say nothing. Asked who you are, you say you are just a strong person.
As an identity, that ends the conversation. It also makes every bad day a contradiction of who you are.
As a possible rule, there is something to look at. Under Strong the fear is that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. Under Burden the same silence would be about not owing anyone, and the fear is that your needs make you too much, and too much gets left.
If someone helped you and literally nobody would ever know, would you accept? Yes is the Strong answer. Still no is the Burden answer.
It may also be neither. You may be a private person who is fine. Real privacy is not a rule, and for Strong the check is cost: whether keeping things hidden is costing you support you need.
04
What stays
What a rule produced is often real and worth keeping. Reliability, care, accuracy and drive need not go anywhere. What may loosen is the condition attached to them.
And if no rule fits, there may be nothing to find, or not enough to tell yet. Subtraction is allowed to end there.
