Can't afford therapy? Free and low-cost options

By · Last updated

If you can't afford therapy, the directory shows each verified practitioner's fees and whether they offer a sliding scale, and some help costs nothing at all.

You read about a kind of work and it made sense. Then you looked at what sessions cost, closed the tab, and felt the usual thing about help being for people with money.

01

What the directory shows

Every listing on /verified shows what the practitioner charges, as they told us, and whether they offer a sliding scale. You can filter by price range and by "offers sliding scale". Fees are published so you know them before you ask.

02

What costs nothing

  • This library and Ask Gina. Every page here is free to read, and Ask Gina is free to use.
  • 988. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (US). It is free, any time.
  • Community and sliding-scale clinics. Many cities have them. The Find a Health Center tool from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration lists health centers that charge on a sliding scale based on income.
  • Your insurance. If you have it, the number on the back of your card can tell you which licensed therapists are covered. What Is Talk Therapy? explains the Arizona licenses.

What this page can't do

It can't tell you whether a particular practitioner will lower their fee. That is between you and them, and it is fair to ask.

If you are in crisis, licensed mental-health care is the right door. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
