How to trust again after being let down

By · Last updated

Learning to trust again after being let down is hard because caution is a fair response to what happened, and each of you may be guarding something different.

Rules this may be

You have been here before. A good month, a real conversation, a promise that this time would be different. Then the slide back. Now one of you says let's try again, and both of you notice how carefully you answer. We both say we want to get it right this time, and then we're in the same place again.

This page is for both of you. It does not tell you to hope.

01

What each of you does

You hedge. You say we'll see. You agree to the plan and keep something back.

One of you may watch for the first sign that it is failing. The other may avoid mentioning the plan at all, so that it can't be seen to fail.

Each of you may read the other's caution as lack of commitment.

One cost may be that anything the two of you try starts with both of you holding back.

02

The caution is fair

Being careful after being let down is an ordinary response. It needs no deeper explanation, and neither of you has to be optimistic for the other.

For Ahead, the entry's own check says the same thing. Watchfulness in a period that really is unstable is accurate. What to look at is whether it continues when things are stable.

03

What the guarding may also be protecting

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

Not hoping may be a way of never being caught unprepared again. Under Ahead, the fear is that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again.

Right

"Being wrong isn't a mistake. It feels like a verdict."

Not hoping may be a way of not being wrong again about the two of you. Under Right, the fear is that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about.

Either of you may be near either one, or near another rule. It may be none, and the caution may be all there is.

04

How the two can lock together

One of you may guard by watching for failure. The other may feel watched, and get careful.

The first may see the carefulness and take it as the early sign they were watching for.

This can happen before anything has gone wrong.

05

A question for each of you

Answer for yourself only.

Control the outcome, or avoid being wrong? Control the outcome is the Ahead answer. Avoid being wrong is the Right answer.

If neither is it, there is not enough to tell yet. That is a result.

06

What can be checked

A promise that this time will be different can't be checked.

Whether there is one loop under the fights can be checked. It can be looked for, and it can turn out not to be there. Subtraction is built to say so.

If being let down again has brought either of you close to something heavier, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
