You slept eight hours and woke up tired. You took the week off and came back the same. Coffee helps for an hour. You keep telling people you just need a good rest, and you have had several. I just feel heavy.
One plain thing first. Tiredness that rest doesn't lift can have a medical cause, and a doctor is the right person to rule that out. This page is about what may be left when that has been done.
This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why does rest feel dangerous.
01
What you do about being tired
You treat it as a rest problem, which is reasonable. You go to bed earlier. You take the time off. You cut one thing from the week. Each helps for a day or two.
Look at how you rest, though. You may rest the way you do everything else, efficiently, with an eye on when you can get back to it. You may rest only once it has been earned. If I'm just sitting with nothing to do I get fidgety. It drives me crazy. And the rest you picture is often an absence of demands more than a presence of anything. My body is begging for rest. A few days where nobody asks me what's for dinner or needs a ride somewhere.
People call this burnout or just getting older. Those may be true. They don't explain why rest helps so briefly.
02
A way to hold the two words
Here is one way to hold the difference. It is a way of looking and not a finding.
On this view, tired is about how much you did. Rest tends to answer it, because rest is what was missing.
Depleted may be about what the doing was for. If most of what you do is done to earn something, such as a place with people or a sense that you count, then stopping may not give that thing back. Rest may never have been where it came from. You can sleep for a week and wake up no further along.
03
What the doing may have been for
That leads a layer down. Two rules can turn ordinary effort into something that drains.
"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."
Under Output the doing may be how you count at all, so every day has to be earned again. Whatever I manage to pull off, the next thought is why wasn't it more, why wasn't it quicker.
Read about Output →"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"
Under Needed the doing may be how you hold your place with people, so it is never finished while anyone needs anything. I looked after everyone else and left myself for last.
Read about Needed →Other rules can sit here as well. If rest is hard because stopping itself does not feel safe, Ahead is the page to read.
04
What is under the rule
Further down, each of these two rules has a fear, and time off may leave it where it was.
Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. If that is running, a rest day may feel like a day of not mattering, which may be why it does not restore much.
Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. If that is running, time off is time when nobody needs you, and that can cost more than it gives.
What would answer them is worth that doesn't require performance, and being wanted and not required. Those are not things rest supplies. That may be the whole difference between the two words.
05
One question that separates them
Who's it for?
Take the last day that left you with nothing. Go down what you did in it. If each thing only mattered because someone needed it, that is the Needed answer. If it would have had to be done with nobody needing it, that is the Output answer.
If the list is short and the day was simply long, you may just be tired, and that is a good answer to get. If you can't tell, there is not enough to go on yet.
Subtraction is the practice of removing the explanations that don't survive, and looking at what does.
06
One thing to try this week
Do one small thing that is for nobody and makes nothing. A walk with no destination, or music with nothing else going on. Give it twenty minutes, early in the day, with the list not done.
Don't make it useful. It is not exercise, and it is not for anyone.
Notice what you tell yourself while you do it, and whether you come away with more than you started with, or less. Write that down. If doing something for nobody is harder than working tired, that is worth knowing.
What happens when you can't stop at all is on I'm Exhausted but I Can't Stop.
