The argument is over. They have gone to the other room. You follow with one more sentence. An hour later you send a text that begins and another thing. You know it will not help, and you send it. When someone tells me something I don't agree with, I either take forever to come around or I just say no.
Wanting to finish your thought is ordinary, and some things do need correcting before a conversation ends.
One limit first. If arguments at home frighten either of you, this page is not the place for that. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

What you do at the end of an argument
The middle of the argument may go like anyone's. The end is where it differs.
You can't leave it where it stopped. If their sentence was the last one, it stays in your head until you answer it. You reopen things that had been closed. You clarify by text. You bring it up again two days later with a better point.
When you do get the last word, there is relief, and it may not last long.
People call it stubbornness, or needing to win.
It can cost you the ending. An argument that might have been over in ten minutes can run for days. The other person may start agreeing just to make it stop, which settles nothing.
02
What the last word may be protecting
"Being wrong isn't a mistake. It feels like a verdict."
Their last sentence may have been wrong, or wrong about you. Under Right, letting it stand can seem like agreeing with it.
Read about Right →"Stillness is where it catches me."
An argument left open is an outcome nobody is managing. Under Ahead, the last word may be a way of closing things so that nothing is left to go wrong later. I don't want to walk into anything blind. I want all of it on the table first so nothing surprises me later.
Read about Ahead →These are two of several, and it may be neither. When it only happens with one person, Approval is worth a look, where the fear is that without their verdict you don't know what you are worth.
03
What is under the rule
Under Right, the fear may be that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about. What would answer it is being able to remain yourself while someone thinks you are wrong.
Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.
Having the last word answers neither, which may be why the relief is short.
04
One question that separates them
Control the outcome, or avoid being wrong?
Control the outcome is the Ahead answer. Avoid being wrong is the Right answer.
If it is neither, there is not enough to tell from this question. That counts.
Not all of this is a rule. A false statement about you at work may need correcting in writing. Being interrupted every time you speak is a reason to insist on finishing. And if the other person has asked for the conversation to stop, stopping is the respectful thing, whatever is under the urge to go on.
This is one question from subtraction, and its job is narrow. It removes one explanation when the answer is clear.

One thing to try this week
Once this week, in a disagreement that does not matter much, let their sentence be the last one.
Say nothing more about it for a full day.
During that day, write down what you believe is now true because you left it there.
What it is like when the argument itself keeps returning is on Why the Same Fight Keeps Happening.
