Why do I go quiet when I'm angry?

By · Last updated

Going quiet when you are angry often protects either the other person from your anger or you from being seen with it.

Rules this may be

Something lands wrong, and you feel it. Then you go still. Your answers get short and polite. You say it's fine and find something to do with your hands. Hours later you are still angry, and now you are also angry that nobody noticed. I might raise my voice for a minute, but it doesn't last. Mostly I swallow it and go quiet.

The quiet looks the same in both cases. What it is keeping from happening is different.

01

What you do with the anger

The silence is what other people see. Here is what may be going on behind it.

You leave the room, or stay and become very efficient. You answer what you are asked and nothing more. Later, you say all of it to someone else. I don't say it in the place where it happened. I hold it in, then unload on my friends afterward.

And it can collect. I never used to get angry at anybody. Sad, yes. Then it all came out at once and I didn't recognize myself.

People call it sulking, or bottling things up. Both describe how the quiet looks from outside. Neither says why speaking felt like the worse option.

There may be a cost on the other side. Silence can get read, and it can be read wrong. One person may take it as punishment. Another may take it as proof that nothing is the matter. Either way they are answering something you did not say.

02

What the quiet may be protecting

One layer down is what would have happened if you had said it. Two rules can turn anger into silence.

Peace

"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."

Saying it might upset them, and their upset may be the thing you can't be near. Under Peace the quiet may be for their sake, or for the sake of the room. Don't say it, because it's going to end up in a fight.

Strong

"Strong is the only version of me they know."

Showing anger may feel like losing composure. Under Strong the quiet may be about not being seen like that. I'm sorry, I don't mean to get upset.

These are not the only two. Going quiet can also appear under Burden, where the fear may be that your needs make you too much, and too much gets left.

03

What is under the rule

Lower down is what each rule would be afraid of in the moment before you spoke.

Under Peace, the fear may be that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. If that is running, their reaction to your anger would count against you, however fair the anger was. What would answer it is being able to disappoint someone and still be alright.

Under Strong, the fear may be that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. Anger can be one way of being seen not handling it. What would answer it is being seen at less than full capacity and still being held.

04

Two questions, in order

Protecting them, or protecting yourself?

Go back to the last time you went quiet, to the second before. Ask what you were keeping from happening. If it was them being upset, that is the Peace answer. If it was something for you, that leaves Strong or Burden, and a second question separates those two. If someone helped you and literally nobody would ever know, would you accept? Yes points to Strong. Still no points to Burden.

If you can't tell, that counts. Not enough to tell is allowed, and it may be neither.

Two things are not a rule. Going quiet to cool down, and then coming back to it, is a skill. And staying quiet around someone it is not safe to be angry near is good judgment. If that is your situation, none of this page applies. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

Ruling one of these out is the point. That is how subtraction works: take away what doesn't account for the evidence, and see what is left.

One thing to try this week

The next time it happens with someone safe, say one sentence before you go quiet. I'm angry. That is why I'm going quiet.

Then go quiet if you want to. You have not changed what you do. You have only said what the quiet is.

Afterward, write down how hard the sentence was to say, and whether the quiet felt any different once they knew what it was.
