Why do I keep overcommitting?

By · Last updated

Overcommitting when you are already full can be about what you produce, about being the one people need, or about not being able to say no.

Rules this may be

You already had too much, and since then you have said yes to three more things. One of them you volunteered for. You watched your own hand go up. Now you are behind on all of it, a little proud of how much you carry, and quietly panicking. I never really chose where I ended up. I just kept saying yes to the next step up.

From outside those are the same yes. They are worth telling apart, because the usual advice only speaks to one of them.

This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why does rest feel dangerous.

01

What you do when something new comes up

The overload is the result. The moment to look at is the one where the new thing arrives.

You say yes before you have looked at the week. You tell yourself it will be quick. You offer before anyone asks, because you can see it needs doing. You don't put anything down to make room. The new thing goes on top.

People call it being overcommitted, or ambitious, or bad at boundaries. The advice that follows is to learn to say no. That may help if the difficulty is saying no. It may do very little if the yes is doing something for you.

There is a cost beyond the hours. When everything is taken on, the things you would have chosen may get what is left. And the people counting on you may be getting a later, thinner version of what you promised.

02

What the yes may be protecting

A layer down is the question of what each new thing gives you. Three rules can make a full person say yes again.

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

More taken on means more made. Under Output the next project may be less a choice than a way of staying someone. I kept picking up new things to be good at, because whatever I already was didn't feel like enough.

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

Each new thing may be one more place where you are required. Everywhere I go, I end up in the spot where the whole thing depends on me saving it. Under Needed that spot may be where you feel surest of your place.

Peace

"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."

A no might leave someone disappointed. Under Peace the yes may have little to do with the work and a lot to do with the face of the person asking. I have a bad problem saying no.

Other rules can do this too, and this page does not reach them.

03

What is under the rule

Lower down is what each rule would be afraid of if you turned the next thing down.

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. A lighter load would mean less to point to.

Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. Something you declined is something that went ahead without you.

Under Peace, the fear may be that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong.

What would answer each is different. Worth that doesn't require performance. Being wanted and not required. Being able to disappoint someone and still be alright. None of those is reached by a better calendar.

04

Two questions, in order

First. Who's it for?

Take the last thing you agreed to. If it only matters because someone needs it done, that is the Needed answer. If it would have had to be done even if nobody needed it, that is the Output answer.

Second. Is it worse when they're upset with you, or when they don't need you?

Picture having said no to that same thing, two ways. In one, the person who asked is annoyed with you. In the other, they say it's no problem and that they didn't really need you for it. If the first is worse, that is the Peace answer. If the second is worse, that is the Needed answer.

This is subtraction in miniature. You are not looking for the explanation that sounds best. You are removing the ones that don't hold. More than one may be left, and if nothing moved, there is not enough to tell yet.

There is a plain explanation as well. Sometimes the load is handed to you, at work or at home, and saying yes is the only real option. What to look at is whether you also say yes where you were free to say no.

05

One thing to try this week

The next time something is offered to you, say let me get back to you tomorrow. Only that.

You are not deciding yet. You are making a gap between being asked and answering, and watching what you want to do in it. Notice whether the pull is to get started, to be the one it depends on, or to make sure they are not let down.

Write down what the gap was like before you give your answer.

What it looks like when the taking on becomes a standing habit is on Overfunctioning.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
