Why can't I relax, even when everything is fine?

By · Last updated

If you can't relax even when everything is fine, you may be waiting for something: more to do, someone to be upset, or something to go wrong.

Rules this may be

The work is done. The house is quiet and nobody needs anything from you. You sit down and find you are braced, as you would be before a hard phone call. You look for the thing you forgot. There isn't one, and you still can't settle. Nothing's actually wrong with my life. That's what makes it so confusing.

After weeks of being busy it can take a while to slow down, and that is ordinary.

This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why does rest feel dangerous.

01

What you do when things are calm

Calm may be when it is worst.

You scan. You run through the people you love and whether each is alright. You run through the week. You check the phone, the stove, the calendar.

Sooner or later one of the checks produces something small to do, and doing it is a relief.

People say you don't know how to enjoy yourself, or that you are always on edge.

It can cost you the good stretches, which are what the hard ones were supposed to be for. The people who are relaxed around you may notice that you are not.

02

What you may be waiting for

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

You may be waiting for the next thing to do. Under Output, an evening with nothing due can feel like something is missing.

Peace

"If everyone is okay, then I'm okay."

You may be waiting for someone's mood to turn. Under Peace, a calm house is one you keep checking. I learned early that keeping people happy was how you stay safe.

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

You may be waiting for something to go wrong. Under Ahead, calm is when nobody is on watch. When everything goes quiet, the smallest sound makes me jump.

There are others, and it may be none of these.

03

What is under the rule

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.

Under Peace, the fear may be that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong. What would answer it is being able to disappoint someone and still be alright.

Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.

04

Three questions, in order

First, for Output and Peace. If you stopped and nobody was upset at all, would you be alright?

Yes is the Peace answer. No, it is the stopping, is the Output answer.

Second, for Output and Ahead. Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered?

Not producing is the Output answer. Not covered is the Ahead answer.

Third, for Peace and Ahead. Are you watching for someone getting upset, or for something going wrong?

Someone getting upset is the Peace answer. Something going wrong is the Ahead answer.

If nothing comes of the three, there is not enough to tell yet. That is a result.

Some of this is accurate and not a rule. In a period that really is unstable, being on guard fits the facts, and for Ahead the check is whether it continues once things are stable. And if you watch someone's mood because you have reason to fear it, none of this page applies. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

The three questions are subtraction. Each can remove one of the things you might be waiting for.

05

One thing to try this week

On the next calm evening, sit for fifteen minutes with a pen.

Each time you catch yourself checking for something, write one word for it: a person, a task, or a risk.

Count the three kinds at the end.
