Why do I ghost people? Ghosting and disappearing

By · Last updated

Ghosting is ending contact without a word, which avoids one conversation and can guard against several different fears.

Their message has gone unanswered for nine days. You meant to reply. Each day it got harder, and now a reply would need an explanation, so you have stopped opening the thread. It is not the first friendship, or the first almost-relationship, that has ended this way. Talking about it doesn't change anything, so I keep it in. I know that's not good for me. It's just easier.

It is easy to judge and harder to understand, and the judging has probably not helped you stop.

01

What it looks like

A slow fade. Replies get later and shorter, and then they stop.

Or a sudden one. You were there on Tuesday and unreachable on Wednesday.

It can happen with dates, friends, family, a job, a group you belonged to. There is often a moment just before it: a favor asked of you, a need of your own, a conflict coming, a step closer.

Afterward there may be relief, and then something heavier that you don't look at.

02

What it protects

Across the rules below, it may spare you one conversation: the one where you say what you need, or hear what they think.

Disappearing is a behavior, and a behavior doesn't tell you why.

03

The rules it can serve, and what is under each

Burden

"Asking creates a debt I don't want to carry."

The silence may start just when you would have had to ask for something, or explain a hard time. Under it, the fear may be that your needs make you too much, and too much gets left. I try not to ask at all, even when not asking makes it harder on me.

Chosen

"I need to be chosen."

You may leave before they can decide against you. Under it, the fear may be that if you are not selected, you were not enough to select.

Other rules can end in silence too. The Peace page describes someone who goes along for a long time and then cuts a person off entirely, and it has its own questions. None of these may be yours.

04

What it buys and what it costs

It buys a way out with no hard conversation. Nothing has to be said, and nobody gets to answer.

What it may cost you is their answer. You never hear what they would have said, so the fear can stay as it was. And the number of people you would have to explain yourself to may grow.

For them, it may mean an ending with no reason attached. Some may assume they did something wrong.

05

How to tell which rule is under it

When you picture them leaving, is it because you weren't enough, or because you were too much?

Think of the last person you went quiet on, and suppose you had stayed in touch. Not enough is the Chosen answer. Too much is the Burden answer.

If neither comes, there is not enough to tell yet. That is a result.

Two things are not this strategy. Letting an acquaintance drift is an ordinary way for an acquaintance to end. And cutting off contact with someone who frightens you, or who will not take no for an answer, is protection. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

The question works by subtraction. It is not asking which rule sounds like you. It is asking which one can be ruled out.

When support may be appropriate. If ghosting and disappearing is part of a pattern that includes self-harm, substance use, severe anxiety or depression, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. In the US, call or text 988.
