The messages stopped in the spring. You still have the last one. You go back over the years looking for the day it turned. On their birthday you write something and don't send it, or send it and hear nothing. I keep going back over it, asking what I got wrong.
Nothing on this page is a way around their decision, and nothing here says who was right.
This can bring a person close to something heavier. If that is where you are, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

What you do in the silence
Some of it is grief, and it looks like grief.
You keep their number in your phone and their things where they left them. You listen for their name when relatives talk. You mark the holidays.
Some of it may be more. You build the full account of what you did for them. You draft the explanation that would make them understand. You look at their photos online and study their face.
You may tell very few people, and tell those few a shorter version.
People say they will come around, or that you did your best.
What it can cost is the rest of your life, which goes on in the meantime. It may also leave less of you for the people who are in your life now.

What the silence may have touched
The loss is real and stands by itself. Beside it there may be one of these.
"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"
Being their parent may have been the center of what you were for. Under Needed, the silence can read as no longer being needed at all, and that may be the hardest form of it.
Read about Needed →"Being wrong isn't a mistake. It feels like a verdict."
Their leaving may read to you as meaning you got it wrong. Under Right, that does not stay limited to one thing.
Read about Right →"I'm still working for someone who may not even be watching anymore."
Their opinion of you may have become the one that counts. Under Approval, no one else's reassurance reaches it.
Read about Approval →These are three of several, and it may be grief and nothing more.
03
What is under the rule
Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. What would answer it is being wanted rather than required.
Under Right, the fear may be that if you are wrong about this, what else are you wrong about. What would answer it is being able to remain yourself while someone thinks you are wrong.
Under Approval, the fear may be that without their verdict you don't know what you are worth. What would answer it is an internal measure that doesn't require ratification.

Two questions, in order
First, for Needed and Approval. Which would be harder to lose: being needed, or one person's good opinion of you?
Being needed is the Needed answer. One person's opinion is the Approval answer.
Second, for Right and Approval. Does it matter less if the person correcting you is someone you don't respect?
Yes, much less is the Approval answer. No, wrong is wrong whoever says it, is the Right answer.
These two do not sort Needed from Right, and this page does not try to.
If the questions sort nothing, there is not enough to tell, and that is a result. So is finding only grief.
Missing your child is not a rule. Wanting to know they are well is not a rule. This page cannot tell you what happened between you, and it does not try.
Subtraction sets the grief aside as grief. What it looks at is anything left over.

One thing to try this week
Make two short lists.
On one, write what you do on the days this is at its worst. On the other, write what you do on the days it is lighter.
Keep both where you can see them.
A different kind of distance from a grown child is on After the Kids Leave.
