Why do I eat at night? Stress eating at night

By · Last updated

If you eat at night, this page looks at the day that came before it, what you held in and who you took care of.

Rules this may be

Everyone is in bed. The kitchen is clean. You stand at the counter and eat without sitting down, and you are not hungry. Afterward you feel worse and promise yourself tomorrow will be different. The day itself went fine. You held it together and took care of everyone.

This page is not about food or weight and offers no eating advice.

If eating has started to frighten you, or feels out of your control, that belongs with a doctor or a licensed clinician, and licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

01

What you do after everyone is asleep

It may be the first thing all day that was only for you.

During the day you are steady and useful. You notice what others need. You don't sit down much. Nobody asks what you need, and you would not know what to say.

Then the house is quiet, and the eating starts. It is quick and private.

People call it emotional eating, or a lack of willpower.

Apart from anything about health, the cost may be the shame afterward, and that anything the day left out goes unnamed.

02

What the day may have left out

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

You may have spent the day on other people. Under Needed, giving may be how you count, and being cared for can be uncomfortable. Comfort may be easier to take where nobody has to provide it.

Strong

"Strong is the only version of me they know."

You may have spent the day holding steady. Under Strong, little may be shown while anyone is watching, and the empty kitchen may be the first place nobody is.

These are two of several, and it may be neither. Sometimes a person is simply hungry at night, or tired.

03

What is under the rule

Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. What would answer it is being wanted rather than required.

Under Strong, the fear may be that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. What would answer it is being seen at less than full capacity and still being held.

04

One question that separates them

Which would be harder: them not needing you, or them seeing you struggle?

Not needing you is the Needed answer. Seeing you struggle is the Strong answer.

If neither is hard, there is not enough to tell from this. That is a result.

A snack at night is not a rule. Being worn out after a long day is not one either. For Strong, what to look at is cost, and whether keeping things hidden is costing you support you need.

Subtraction does not look at the food. It looks at the day, and asks which explanation of the day can be set aside.

05

One thing to try this week

Each evening this week, when the day's work is done, write one line about the day.

Note who you took care of, and one thing you kept to yourself.

Change nothing else. Read the lines after a week.

When a habit like this is a way of not feeling the day, that is described on Numbing.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
