Vacation anxiety: why I can't relax on vacation

By · Last updated

Vacation anxiety, not being able to relax or take a vacation, can be about what stops when you stop, who goes without you, or what might go wrong.

Rules this may be

You have days saved up and no plan to use them. When you do go, the laptop comes too. You check in on the first morning, just to see. By day three you are restless, and by day five you are counting how long until you are back. I shouldn't have to go away somewhere just to be allowed a day of doing nothing.

Those are three different reasons to stay reachable, and a better out-of-office message only helps with one.

This is one shape of a wider pattern. The fuller picture is here: why does rest feel dangerous.

01

What you do instead of going

Start with what happens around the time off, before and during.

You postpone it until things calm down, and they don't. You choose dates around everyone else. You take long weekends that are half work. Before you leave you brief four people and tell them all to call if anything comes up.

And once you are there, you stay half at home. I don't go anywhere, because what if I'm needed and I'm not around.

People call it being dedicated, or being a control freak, depending on how they feel about you. Neither says what the time away would cost you.

There are costs to not going, too. The people you travel with may get a version of you that is only partly there. A team that can never be left may never learn it can manage. And you can come back as worn out as you left.

02

What staying reachable may be protecting

Next is what a week away would take from you. More than one rule can make time off hard to take.

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

A week off is a week with nothing to show for it. Under Output that may leave you unsure who you are while it lasts. Taking time off just for me goes against everything I've ever done.

Needed

"If they didn't need me, why would I be here?"

A week off is a week of other people managing. Under Needed, the check-in call may be less about the work and more about hearing that you are still needed.

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

A week off is a week away from your routine and out of sight of everything you watch. If I miss one day of my routine I feel guilty, like everything's about to slide. Under Ahead the unease may start before you leave the house.

Other rules can keep a person on call too, and this page does not reach them.

03

What is under the rule

A week away can be where the fear under one of these rules shows up.

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter.

Under Needed, the fear may be that without your usefulness there is no reason for you. Coming back to find that everything went fine can land as bad news.

Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again.

Each fear asks for something else: worth that doesn't require performance, being wanted and not required, or safety that doesn't require vigilance. A week on a beach can be a chance to find out whether one of those is missing, which may be why it is so hard to book.

04

Two questions, in order

First. Who's it for?

Take the thing you would check on from wherever you went. If it only matters because someone needs it, that is the Needed answer. If it would have to be done even if nobody needed it, that is the Output answer. This question only sorts Needed from Output. It says nothing about Ahead, which the second question reaches.

Second. Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered?

Picture the third day away with your phone off. If what bothers you is that nothing is getting made, that is the Output answer. If what bothers you is that nobody is keeping watch, that is the Ahead answer.

What you are doing here is subtraction: keeping only what explains this moment and the others like it, at work, at home, and on the good days. If neither question lands, there is not enough to tell yet.

Not all of this is a rule. Some jobs do cost people their standing when they take leave, and money is money. If that is your situation, your caution is accurate. What to look at is whether it is also hard to take a free Saturday.

05

One thing to try this week

Take one free day this week, such as a Saturday, with no errand in it and no check-in. One day, not a week.

Decide beforehand what would count as an emergency, tell one person, and leave the rest.

Then notice the first two hours. Write down what you wanted to check, and what you thought would happen if you didn't.

If time off tends to end with you in bed, that is When You Get Sick Every Time You Stop.

Your next step

Read this one page next.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.
