The first glass is poured while dinner is cooking. It is the moment the day ends. Without it you are still at work in your head at nine. You don't think of it as a problem. You have noticed that you look forward to it by mid-afternoon.
This page is not about alcohol itself and gives no advice about drinking. This library is not addiction care.
If anything about your drinking worries you, including how much you count on it or what an evening without it is like, or you can't stop when you mean to, that belongs with a doctor or a licensed clinician, and licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.
01
What you do in the evening
It may be the only off switch you have found.
The day is effort from the first minute. You are composed, capable and available. Then the glass, and something seems to loosen. You may feel more like yourself with your family for an hour.
On nights without it, you tend to find a task.
People say everyone needs to unwind.
What it may cost, apart from anything to do with health, is that what the day asked of you never gets looked at.
02
What may need switching off
"Strong is the only version of me they know."
It may be the effort of seeming fine. Under Strong, composure can run all day, and the evening may be the first time it is allowed to stop.
Read about Strong →"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."
It may be the drive to keep going. Under Output, stopping can feel like leaving something undone.
Read about Output →Other rules are possible, and it may be none. Plenty of people have a drink in the evening for no reason beyond liking it.
03
What is under the rule
Under Strong, the fear may be that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. What would answer it is being seen at less than full capacity and still being held.
Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.
04
One question that separates them
Which is harder: having nothing to show, or being seen struggling to get it done?
Nothing to show is the Output answer. Being seen struggling is the Strong answer.
If neither fits, there is not enough to tell, and that is a result.
Enjoying a drink is not a rule. For Strong, what to look at is cost, and whether what you keep hidden is costing you support you need. For Output, what tells you more is what happens when the producing stops.
Subtraction is not a way of judging the habit. It asks what the habit is doing, and removes the answers that don't fit.

One thing to try this week
Each morning this week, write one line about the day before.
Finish this sentence: What I wanted to switch off from yesterday was.
Change nothing else. Read the seven lines at the end of the week.
How switching off works as a strategy is on Numbing.
