Depressed and lost after a layoff

By · Last updated

Feeling depressed and lost after a layoff can follow the real loss of income and routine, and under it may be a question about your worth without the work.

Rules this may be

The meeting took eleven minutes. By noon your laptop was locked. You have told three people, and each time you made it sound fine. Now it is two in the afternoon on a Tuesday, you are at home, and you don't know what the hours are for. I'm not good at home by myself with just my thoughts.

The practical worry comes first and is accurate. This page is about what may sit beside it.

Losing a job can bring you close to something heavier. If that is where you are, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

01

What you do in the weeks after

Some of it is simply the work of finding work.

You update the resume. You make the calls. You do the arithmetic on how long the money lasts.

Some of it may be more. You apply to forty jobs in two days and feel worse. You avoid people who will ask what you do. You fill the day with tasks so that it resembles a workday. You are awake at four, planning.

People say it happens to everyone, or that something better is coming.

It can cost you sleep, and the company of the people you are avoiding.

02

What the layoff may have touched

Start with what is plain. An income stopped, and a place you went every day is closed to you.

Under that there may be one of these.

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

Having work to do may have been what made a day count. Under Output, a day with nothing produced is hard on its own, and now there are many. If I stop pushing I just idle, and I don't know who I'd be without something to chase.

Ahead

"Stillness is where it catches me."

The job may have been what kept things under control. Under Ahead, the layoff is the thing you were watching for, and it came anyway. I've always been the one with a plan. Right now I've got nothing.

Other rules can sit here too, and it may be none. Losing a job is hard with no rule involved.

03

What is under the rule

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.

Under Ahead, the fear may be that if you stop managing, something goes wrong again. What would answer it is safety that doesn't require vigilance.

A new job would end the unemployment. It may not answer either of these.

04

One question that separates them

Is the problem that you're not producing, or that you're not covered?

Not producing is the Output answer. Not covered is the Ahead answer.

Right now it may honestly be both, since you have lost output and cover in the same week. Then there is not enough to tell yet, and that is a result.

Much of this is not a rule. Money pressure is real, and a financial counselor may be the right help with that part. A period like this one really is unstable. For Ahead, the check is whether the watchfulness continues once things are stable again. For Output, what tells you more is what happens when the producing stops, and it just has.

Subtraction can wait until the urgent things are handled. When you come back to it, the question above is where it starts.

One thing to try this week

Each evening this week, write one line about the hardest hour of the day.

Note what you were doing, and whether the trouble was having nothing to show or not knowing what comes next.

Read the seven lines on the weekend.
