Anxiety after a health scare

By · Last updated

Anxiety after a health scare is real and comes first, and beside it there may be a question about who you are when you can't push through or can't produce.

Rules this may be

The results came back clear, or clear enough. Everyone said how relieved you must be. You went back to work the following Monday. Since then you have been tired in a new way, and you find yourself checking for signs when nobody is looking.

Anything about your health itself is a question for your doctor, and nothing on this page is medical advice.

A scare like this can bring you close to something heavier. If that is where you are, licensed mental-health care is the right door.If tonight is an emergency, call or text 988 (US). This library is not that door.

01

What you do after the scare

Some of it is what anyone does after a fright.

You notice your body more. You read too much online. You are careful for a few weeks, and then less careful.

Some of it may be more than that. You told very few people, and told them afterward. You were back at full speed before you were ready. You made a joke of it at dinner. Or you found that being made to stop, even for a week, was harder than the scare.

People tell you to take it as a wake-up call.

Going straight back can cost you the chance to take in what happened. Keeping it quiet can cost you the people who would have wanted to know.

02

What the scare may have touched

The fear for your health needs no further explanation. Beside it there may be one of these.

Strong

"Strong is the only version of me they know."

Being a patient means being seen at less than your best. Under Strong, the scare may have been hardest in the waiting room, where other people could see you were frightened.

Output

"If I'm not producing, I don't know who I am."

Being a patient means stopping. Under Output, the days you could not work may have been as hard as the worry.

Other rules can be here, and it may be none. Being frightened by your own body is enough.

03

What is under the rule

Under Strong, the fear may be that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have. What would answer it is being seen at less than full capacity and still being held.

Under Output, the fear may be that without achievement you don't matter. What would answer it is worth that doesn't require performance.

Neither needs sorting out while you are still getting well.

04

One question that separates them

Which is harder: having nothing to show, or being seen struggling to get it done?

Nothing to show is the Output answer. Being seen struggling is the Strong answer.

If neither is it, there is not enough to tell, and that is a result. So is finding only fear.

Wanting privacy about your health is not a rule. For Strong, what to look at is cost, and whether keeping it hidden is costing you support you need. For Output, what tells you more is what happens when the producing stops.

Subtraction leaves the medical part entirely to your doctor. What it looks at is how you went through it.

05

One thing to try this week

Write down who knew at the time, and who you told afterward.

Beside each name, write what you told them.

Read the list and see what you left out, and with whom.

A related page, about what happens when you finally stop, is When You Get Sick Every Time You Stop.

Your next step

Read this one page next.

Just one. You don't have to read them all.

When this may need professional support. If what you are dealing with includes self-harm, severe depression or anxiety, substance dependence, or trauma symptoms that disrupt daily life, licensed mental-health care is the right door. Project Gina does not replace it. In the US, call or text 988.
