People tell you how strong you are, and how well you handle things. Someone close to you has said something else: that you are hard to know. The praise and the complaint may be about one habit. I learned early not to show it, and now I come across as hard. Being admired for it has not made a bad day any easier to show.
The Strong rule gets mistaken for resilience, for coldness, and for three other rules that keep a hard time quiet for different reasons. It helps to know which one you are looking at, since they don't ease the same way.
01
One silence, four reasons
Take the plainest case. You had the worst week you have had in a year, and you told nobody.
Under Strong, you may have said nothing because telling anyone meant being seen struggling.
Under Burden, because telling would have asked something of someone, and left you owing them.
Under Peace, because telling would have upset them, and their being upset is hard for you to be near.
Under Needed, because you are the one others come to, and they shouldn't have to look after you.
From outside, those four weeks are identical. What a person does can't tell you why. So you can talk to me, you know gets four different silences in reply.
02
What is under each one
One layer down, the four come apart.
Strong says: if they see me struggle, they'll see I was never who they thought. "Strong is the only version of me they know." The fear is that if they see you struggle, you lose the only standing you have.
Burden: the fear is that your needs make you too much, and too much gets left.
Peace: the fear is that someone's disappointment means you did something wrong.
Needed: the fear is that without your usefulness there is no reason for you.
03
The questions that separate them
Strong or Burden: if someone helped you and literally nobody would ever know, would you accept? Yes is the Strong answer, because the threat was being seen. Still no is the Burden answer, because the debt exists privately.
Strong or Peace: protecting them, or protecting yourself? If you kept quiet so they would not be upset, that is the Peace answer. If it was for your own sake, that leaves Strong or Burden, and the first question separates those.
Strong or Needed: which would be harder, them not needing you, or them seeing you struggle? Seeing you struggle is Strong. Not needing you is Needed.
More than one can be true. None may be, and a result of nothing is still a result.
Each question works by ruling an explanation out, not by confirming one. That way of working is called subtraction.
04
Mistaken in the other direction
People looking at you can get it wrong too.
Some people may take it to mean you need no one. Someone who always seems fine may not get checked on, so the less you show, the less you may be asked.
Others may take it for coldness. A partner or friend who never sees you shaken may conclude that nothing reaches you, including them.
Your own name for it may be resilience, and part of it is. You do get through hard things. Whether anyone is allowed to see you while you are in one is a separate question.
05
What is not a rule at all
Privacy is not the rule. Plenty of people prefer not to talk about feelings and are fine. The measure is cost, and whether keeping it hidden is costing you support you need.
Real steadiness is not the rule either. Some things don't shake a person, and there is nothing behind the calm to find.
You may also have read this far and recognized none of it. That counts as an answer, and it narrows where to look.
Shutting Down looks at shutting down as a strategy and at the rules that can be under it.
